Wrap Around Tail Lights Question

Postby starfire » Mon Jun 29, 2015 9:17 pm

Used to be, if you didn't know what year an Oldsmobile was, you could look at the tail lights and they would have the model year on the tail lights (like my 1968 Cutlass tail lights say "68 GUIDE" (Guide Lamp Division of GM made the tail lights) on them. But then they went and started using the same tail lights from model year to model year. Does anyone know if they continued to change the year designation on the Starfire/Monza wrap around tail lights each model year? The tail lights on my '78 say "75 GUIDE" on them.

Is this correct? Did all wrap around tail lights from '75 to '78 (on the Olds at least, in '79 and '80 they had the flat tail lights) say "75 Guide" on them?

Thanks,
Alan

Back in the day taillights changed year to year, so it was natural to have the correct year on them. With the use of lamps for many years I would not be surprised if many if not all of them had 75 on them since that was the first year. I can't say for sure if all years say 75 on them, but I doubt GM would change the mold for the lense just for that.

Do they have the raised Skyhawk logo on them though?

Hey this is neat, I'll check my spyder tomorrow and see. I suspect my taillights aren't the originals.

The Skyhawk may be more specific especially if it has the raised bird on it, obviously that would be a different mold than used on Monza's and Starfires. I think a lot of cars are like this that used the same lenses on multiple years.
