GT dash

Postby 1972vegaz28 » Tue Mar 29, 2016 3:41 pm

Hey all, I just bought a gt dash from a guy I know. I have two now, and was wondering why the woodgrain faceplates have different designs on them. Wondering if one is from an early car and one is from a later one. One is for ac and one is not. But otherwise the same. Thanks.

I think the gt dash changed from '72 to '73. Not sure if there was another change beyond that??

As I recall, the early GT dash bezel had a "burled" or "birdseye" brownish woodgrain, while the later GT's had a straighter, redder grain.

My findings are not exact, as GM did a lot of parts swapping on the lines whenever they ran out of certain items ..... there were several labor strikes during this early time frame....... but for the most part, my experience has found:

'71-'72 got the straighter-grain, darker color

'73-up got the lighter "Burlwood" like grain.

My '73 Image

Pontiac's woodgrain (obviously '73-later) is the anomaly...... it seemed to have "something" different............. more reddish tint (or tanner... something) to my eye.... and seems to be the early style woodgrain pattern...........
I don't think the Pontiacs got the '73-later Burlwood style woodgrain...... correct me if I'm wrong.

Once again, typically '71-'72 are the same..... '73-up the same...... but I've seen the early woodgrain on later cars..... I don't think I've ever seen the '73- later woodgrain on a '71-'72, though. Not that it hasn't happened, maybe the parts supplier changed/added the later grain sometime for the '73 year.... but there were still early style items on hand for the later cars????

I believe there are three different patterns. I have personally seen all but 75 GT dashes.

71, 72 is walnut
73, 74, 75 is burlwood
76, 77 is similar to 71-72 but a different grain pattern and a bit darker.

There may be subtle differences between them, but I think the groupings above are identical from my perception.

Early years also had the same pattern on the hard plastic door inserts (optional).

I think Ken is correct; I missed the fact that there were 3 different styles. I've had a bunch of GT's but they were all 76 & 77, and the one burled one I came across I removed from a 72, but I suspect that it had been changed. There wasn't a lot of other GT badging on the car.

Yes. I tend to agree with Ken on this. 3 basic types.
I called the 3rd type the Pontiac version in my three pics above..... but I suppose all the later ones (76 & 77) are slightly different than the 71-72 and are not just Pontiac specific.

Just signed up to forum. Don’t know if looking in correct place or not. But I was looking for a underdash cover for my

I pulled dash out of a 76 Vega GT one time in a salvage yard and it had the darker straight grain look to it like a 71-72 would have
