If you started w/a stock rust free vega what would you do?

Postby straws » Wed Jun 24, 2020 10:38 am

I am negotiating for a very clean stock vega with automatic. I am doing my research now to see what is the best course of action for a daily driver, tire burner. I would consider LS, SBC, or Ecotec. The cool factor is the LS, but lack of headers is a issue.

I am opening this up to all suggestions. Nothing is cut on the car, and it does not have AC! From best rear axle, ratios, spindles, exhaust...you name it! Looking forward to this. I had a 74 GT with 283 4 speed/posi in high school, and a 75 w/350 auto with posi sold b/c needed $. Loved them both, and now I am in a position to do what I want, but tastefully and very organized!

what year is the car ?
LS headers and swap manifolds are available for a Vega.
SBC is the easiest, all aluminum LS would be my choice from scratch if you have the time, money and LS experience.

This is going to sound crazy, but I think I’d swap in a rotary like the one in this video that did 750HP at the rear wheels.

I am in the midst of an iron block LS 5.3 with a TH-350. Engine is completed. All suspension work completed and re-installed (rear is a 3.42, cobbled from the Vega tubes, S-10 axles, and Firebird diff). Trying to source a reputable welder for the tubular steel re=enforcements for the frame (lack thereof). Will not pull the 4 cylinder until this is addressed. This car is going to be a money taking sleeper. looks exactly like it rolled out of a time capsule from 1976.

I always like the look of a "factory" V8 Vega. Most of can be done with V8 Monza parts. Some weight saving aluminum engine parts is always cool.

Not sure if you considered it but im putting in a b230f Volvo.
It has the same cc as the original 4 cilinder but available in turbo or 16v.
Lot of tuning options with these engines and they are super reliable and will do about 400.000 miles without a problem.
Ill start my engine swap this december and will start a thread.
