Swapping in a small block - header recommendations?

Postby Chief_Runs_W_Coyotes » Sun Sep 06, 2020 8:39 pm

Looking at starting the planning stages for a gen 1 small block swap. A search on summit racing shows a plethora of options with many variations. I’m planning to swap in v8 support plates and do a factory style installation in a current 4cyl car. Also planning to retain the factory 4 speed and 2.93 rear gears and keep the power around the high 200’s to low 300’s (figured this might be an important factor in selecting the headers).

So what did you use for your swap and if you had to do it over again would you buy something different?

I forgot to add it’s a sunbird coupe because that makes a difference I would assume

~ For some reason, after I had purchased the Sanderson Shorties for the 4.3 v6, we couldn't get the driver side to fit without modifying the steering shaft with a double U-joint..so we abandoned that idea and went with stock exhaust out of a 4.3 Vortec Xtreme.

Header fit will be determined by the individual car. There are many variables and clearances are tight under normal conditions. I have heard some people say they fit with no mods and others say they had to "adjust" them. Every car is a little different and throw in a engine swap and things change even more.

Thanks for the replies! I found what I needed so now I can realistically plan and budget this out.

Before you order them there are different Sandersons for straight plug, angle plug, Vortec and D port heads.
They offer plain, painted and ceramic coated.

I tried sandersons in a 79 monza and the right side had issues with the tower so switched to hooker 2135 they fit with no issues.
Hope this helps, Merle
