'78 Skyhawk Master Cylinder?

Postby boothguy » Fri Sep 11, 2020 9:11 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum and I hope I can get some help sourcing a master cylinder- apparently they are obsolete- at least everywhere I have tried. The part looks similar to a lot of other GM MC's of the era but don't have the 7/8ths inch bore.Would a 1" bore work? Is there a source I don't know about for these? What is everyone else doing when they need a new master cylinder? Thanks

Turns out I live about 10 miles from White Post and know them well, in fact I installed their paint booth. Unfortunately I don't have a core to give them. I thought about seeing if they could sleeve one from another readily available GM product (camaro? malibu?) down to 7/8ths. Just thought someone may have already come up with a work around.

Most places I've tried say its NLA- NAPA and Rock Auto still have a "good" part number but are "out of stock" and have been back ordered for a long time. Apparently there isn't enough demand to make them or enough cores available for remans.

78-88 monte carlo/malibu/el camino/grand prix etc. had 7/8 master cylinders. just don't get the step bore type for the low drag calipers.

Not sure where you are but I was able to get a rebuild master cylinder for my 80 skyhawk about 5 months ago at NAPA. I'm in Ontario Canada. It took less than a week to come in. Cost around $150.

Bill did you bring your own "Vaseline, texture optional" The rubbers for a rebuild are still available and cheap (ish I guess after looking now)!
Rock Auto: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/buick,1978,skyhawk I know you were feeling the time pinch and that only hurt a lot for a while, but she is driving! And that is a WIN!

these should be 7/8 or just look up 1980 chevrolet malibu 7/8 bore is .875 24mm is .944
manual brake malubu, monte carlo, etc is 7/8 power brake is 24mm
so you want a manual brake malibu master for you monza
