FIRST TIME TO THE TRACK

Postby bigbro36 » Fri Apr 18, 2014 10:21 am

So I went to the strip last night and made 2 passes. RAN 12.61 AND 12.60 WITH 1.9 60FT TIMES. The motor was braking up around 5,000 rpm so I was shifting at that point. I have an hei distributor that may be worn out so here are the questions. I dont think the hei is up to snuff so Should I use an msd setup? The 60ft times I want lower so I was thinking about a 3000 stall convertor over the 2200 I have. Will this help? The motor is a 355 flat tops, pro comp 210 heads howards cam 488 lift 373 monza rear. No need to abuse me just looking for some suggestions. Thanks in advance....

What fuel pump are you using? I noticed a block off plate for the mechanical one in the build thread. Aside from the distributor, that could be an issue if you are running a stock pump.

Not too many Stock HEI's will go past 5500/6000 when in perfect shape, if this is a little less than that, it could definitely be a major contributor to the problem. Check the condenser, coil, module, and cap/wires, you are near the end of its design threshold. There are lots of upgrades available for that excellent ignition system, there is a reason for so many still in use today! You could have break down due to degraded parts, or cross fire, etc. They are also known for a bleed through condition right through the adv. mechanism and shaft, check all that ass'y out as well. Just some of my experience. I hope this (or something easier or cheaper helps) You will get many good ideas to check out. Harry

I realize you should & need to fix your breaking up issue first, but looking at the time vs. mph I'd be very concerned with the 60 ft. 110 mph is moving out for only a 1.9 60 ft. & 12.60 et.
Are you spinning leaving the line? What are you running for rear tires? Get the 60 ft. down where it should be & there has to be a high 11 second slip in there. Lorne

Accell Super Coil and Module will fix your problem with HEI, RPM is unlimited after those parts are added. ( use the Accell cap and rotor too - brass terminals and some good spiral core wires )

Raced for many years with those parts, never a problem.............even used them in totaly different motors. ( 151 Pontiac to 425 Cadillac)
