Is this the Vega 4 or the Pontiac 4?

Dick

EDIT: I looked at your earlier posts and it seems to be a Vega. I don't know why it shouldn't come loose. Do you have the oil pan off? You can tap the inside of the oil pump toward the front, sounds like you just have a stuck-on gasket.

Just wondering, cause i'm probably going to remove it a couple of weeks.
What would be the difference between a 4cyl Vega and a astre, they are the same right?

Also, and I know I sound green but, is it very difficult to change out the rear main seal on motor now that everything is all apart?? I would hate to get everything back together and see another oil leak..the way it looks now it has oil everywhere and im cleaning it more than anything else..hopefully I can do this once and do it proper, the last guy I had rebuild the motor used a lot of silicone but that was almost 30 years ago.hopefully it can last another 30 dry so they can bury me in it..

Al,

Now is the BEST time to change the rear main seal! If you don't want to mess with the rope seal, use a neoprene seal from a 230/250 Chevy 6-cylinder. Just cut off the tabs that stick out the side of one seal.

Thanks Chuck, Is that the same seal that the club sells?? DO you still need the rope or did I misread that?? and do I need to remove the crank or just the rear bearing?? Sorry for all the questions, Thanks Al

Al,

Yes, it's the same one the Club sells. If you have the rope seal set already, you'll need the two straight seals and nails for either side of the cap. It's a whole lot easier to install the seal if you remove the crank, although it can be done with it installed but all of the main caps loosened. The bearing does not have to be removed.
