1979 Oldsmobile Starfire Project

Postby 79oldstar » Tue Jun 30, 2009 10:08 am

I'm starting up work on my project car once again and the first thing I need to fix are the doors. I put some new weatherstripping on the doors which was a match to the original shape but slightly bigger. The doors now no longer close. I assume it is because the weatherstripping is a bit bigger. For this reason I was wondering if there is somewhere I can look to find the correct weatherstripping for the doors for my '79 hatchback? I also have a problem with the door latch on the drivers side. Before the new weatherstripping the "first-stage" latch worked, but it wouldn't close all the way. I was wondering if anybody else had this problem and if there are suggestions as to why it may not close all the way. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I actually had to replace the latch on my drivers door, as it had the same issues as you are describing, not wanting to catch other than the first step.

The latch on the body is adjustable. You can loosen it and slide it around to get a better fit. Most new weatherstripping makes it hard to close the dorrs for a while. Eventually it will conform to the body and compress a bit.
