Mini Tubbed 75 Monza Coupe

Postby 383vegawagon » Sun Jan 13, 2013 11:59 am

:th: I am helping my buddy with his 75 Monza Coupe that he recently picked up for a steal... When we got the car back to his place and started to map out the project and at first it was just going to be a simple little V8 swap and mild upgrades. Well,,, it was obvious after closer inspection that the rust had taken hold of the control arm pockets and the inner wheel well structural area. So much for using a stock suspension on this project, my wheels started turning and we decided to do a mini tubbed, 4 link set up with no rear rails added, YEAH!. We're about 2 months in now and I will start adding the photos that I have taken so far... I'll keep adding them as we go, this should end up as a pretty cool little low budget project!

We cut out the entire inner wheel house, just into the original spring pocket area, this should give us clearance for an 11.5" tire when completed. We are leaving the outer wheel house in place, the mini tubs will tie into them.

Here is a shot from the truck, it gives an idea of what size the tubs will be.. Right after this we added in the 1 1/2"X1 1/2" X 3/16 box frame connectors, we tied them in just inside the pinch weld area of the rockers, they tucked up in real nice! The idea is frame connectors, 4 link suspension, coil overs and an 8 point bar. Our plan is to ties everything together real good but not add rear frame rails. March on!

Some more progress today, more for the floor cut out to make room for the 4 link crossmember to be installed. We had to shorten the 4 link bars 1" to get the rear centered correctly. The 4 link crossmember sits nicely on top of the frame connectors, we made the frame connectors double wide at the back to give more surface contact. We will tie the crossmember into the sills and when the roll bar gets installed we will weld the kick in bars to the top of the crossmember as well. More pics to come...
