This is a very interesting build, looks like the 455 fits in there pretty well. It should scoot pretty well with that engine

since you are talking about running an electric water pump and might be short on space up front maybe you can copy this idea in the link to free up some room without having to chop up your rad support, have a look its different! viewtopic.php?f=1&t=32322&p=179969&hilit=remote+water+pump#p179969 .

fred thats a neat idea with the water pump.only thing is if the car is a street car, im not so sure if the electric water pumps will do the job to keep the engine cool . also if its a sreet car then that ladder bar suspension will probably loosen up a few fillings in the teeth of the driver. they are not best suspension for the street. a four link of some sort would probably be better. just my thought. i could be wrong. still gonna be a nice build when its done. art

hey 77 my thought on the ladder bars giving stiff ride has nothing to do with the coilovers. i know you got the right spring rate for your car. its just that the ladder bars, when installed, make the whole rear suspenion rigid. jack car under ladder bar on one side and the other side lifts up also. dont happen with a four link. that acts like an independent suspension rear when you jack it up(only one side goes up.)ladder bars are known for their violent hit at launch and are alot less adjustable than a 4 link.they definitely work, just a hard ride for the street. art

I like that 455 idea.
Just FYI. I dont know about that style electric pump(meant to bolt on sbc) but. I can vouch for the Inline version that Mezier(prob spelled wrong) Makes. I ran one on a Corvair/Toronado I built a while back. I used a front radiator and plumbed back to mid engine 455 Olds. I drove it on the street religiously. To work, cruises, etc... All summer long. Never had overheating issue.
But as you said. I paid big bucks for it. Prob. 8 yrs ago was almost $400.

I wanna see how you get exhaust in there. LOL

Left side header will be interesting to fabricate; it's tough enough to get around the steering shaft, but having the starter over there as well to go around sounds like quite a challenge.
Awesome idea to have "real" Pontiac power in an Astre.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....
