It finally begins...

Postby T-FATTY » Thu Aug 15, 2013 8:03 pm

I drop off my '72 Vega hatch tomorrow to my friends shop, it has a generic 355 [for now] with a full man. turbo 350 and a narrowed 12 bolt with 4:56s. It's going to have the following work/upgrades.

Griffin radiator
Electric fan/relay
Trans cooler
S10 dual piston "loaded" spindles
V6 Monza coil springs
S10 shocks
Overkill upper/lower powdercoated control arms - front [rears on the way]
Battery box - rear hatch area
Some finish welding on subframe connectors

That's it for now as I want to drive it a little before the season ends, it will have a whole new list for the winter. I can't wait to drive it, I've only driven it twice - first when I bought in 1998 stock home. Second time, twice around the block after engine/trans/rearend swap in 2000.

Excellent project; it should be a blast to drive. If you're going to move the battery to the back, think about putting it in the spare tire well. You can forget the spare altogether and just carry a can of flat-fix. Or hunt down a mid 70's X-body(Nova) inflatable; they're only a D-78-14 and will fit in the space with the battery and not be too tall for the car like the Camaro space-saver spare is. if you use an AGM sealed gel battery (like an Optima) it doesn't have to go in a box.

77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)

03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter

99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Spencer are there two Camaro space savers one a doughnut (Do-Nut), and an inflatable one or are they different, as I have seen both over the years with my brothers Camaro "Addiction" but they were all old and may not have been "Original". I have also seen them at swap meets that list their inflate-spare's for sale as Camaro's and Nova (according to the sign) with the 14" wheel, $30 at the second last swap meet! I know I should have bought it, but I'm still not sure it will fit the (unknown as of now) brake set-up I maybe running! Harry

Rebuilt carb on, fresh gas and plugs. Timing and carb set it sounds like it should, nice little gallop. I took the front two 1970s ET slotted mags to be glass beaded, they came out beautiful. They have a matte/ speckle finish that looks like a real magnesium wheel, that dark grey finish that I cleared. Couldn't be happier with the result so i'll dismount and do the rears now.

Still waiting for my buddy to start the install on all the other stuff listed above, hopefully Monday. My little buddy [Vega] has been waiting patiently for 16 years while I played with other toys and now is finally it's turn.

Got an email from Justin/Overkill racing, the rear upper/lower control arms shipped. When they get here they'll go to be powder coated. Third gen Camaro springs are on the way and new shocks are already here.
