1972 Vega GT hatchback build

Postby paranoid56 » Mon Sep 30, 2013 10:59 pm

well picked this up the other day sure its going to be an expensive journey :D
currently it needs lots of work. no motor or trans.
it will be getting a basic 350 and th350 trans.

so far i orders all new rubber seals for the car as the stock ones are dead.

things i need to pick up
maybe a fiberglass rear hatch as the stock one has some rust.
would love to find the lower front splitter too
engine :D

started getting into it cleaning it up some.
the PO did a funky rear fuel cell. i got under it and there is no stock fuel tank. but i did see what looked like a selector valve.
from inside the trunk

under the airplane type cover.
Image

also took the gauge cover off so i can draw it up and make a new cover to hold some autometer gauges.

the speaker was just sitting in the dash. this thing is bad looking. covered in goooooo.
Image

yea not sure this worked anymore

Got all new seals for the car. (rear hatch, doors, window seals and felts and sealant/glue)
here is what the old one looked like. i think it was dead
Image

and the new one going in (although i am not sure which direction it gets installed.)
Image

yea, old one was dead

i already fixed some of the surface rust in the channel. however the hatch is pretty far gone. major rust. so might look for a new one or maybe a fiberglass replacement.

well my vega v8 swap kit showed up. I must be spoiled with suby parts as these looks like shot :D

the transmission mount and engine mounts. I probably should have just made these, and i might just use these to make a jig and make a better set. not sure yet.
Image

and look at these sweet headers. I have never seen cheap raw steel headers before. i might see if some standard short headers fit. As its going to be hard to make these nice. or maybe just wrap them.

Which kit is that? I have a set of those motor mounts kicking around and don't know who made them.

That's gonna be one sweet car once you get it done. Keep it up!

Well, that's a little better than pulling the defrost ducts out and finding them full of dried

Vega update.
This is going to be fun to fix. but i have watched enough overhalling, fast and loud, wheeler dealers, horsepower, bla bla that i think i can do this
Image

went out to the metal shop to pick up some sheetmetal to fix this. saw these two wonders in the parking lot picking up some metal
Image

on the way home i needed to stop at the great china tool shop to pick up a brake to bend the lip to fix this.
ended up with this 30" 350lb behemoth  hoping that it would do what i want. It says its a finger brake, sheer and a roller.
Image

damn thing actually sheered 20ga metal 30" wide. was quite surprised
Image

put it in the brake to make the first of many pieces and it bent it perfect. to reform the lip, its going to require 3 different bent pieces.
Image

I ordered up a shrinker stretcher combo so i can put a bend in it to match the lines of the hatch.
