My 71 GT hatch

Postby MM71VegaDad » Wed Apr 27, 2016 11:55 pm

I thought I'd start a journal. This is such a helpful forum. I have 2 Vegas. A 72 fully done that I didn't build but is my pride and joy. Then this one that I am building as a fun driver. It's a 71 gt with a buick v6 that I just pulled over the weekend. I have a fresh 3.8 ready to install, just waiting on clutch and to swap stuff over from old to new engine. The plan is to paint 'period correct' yellow with black stripe, almost school bus color. I've had this one since September. I've fixed some rust, replaced radiator and went to mechanical fan, turn signal switch, gas tank repair, few other things. Strange not to rush through a build, but nice.

Maiden voyage with new v6.. So far pretty smooth.
Ran into clutch trouble and had to replace clutch cable. Next will probably be seats and then paint... Budget permitting.

Awesome! My first Vega had a 3.2L Buick V6. I loved the torque that engine produced.
The torque it provides is much better than the stock 2300. While it's not really a horsepower motor, it's a great package.... and a definite improvement over stock. The extra weight wasn't that much of an issue for my stock brakes, either.
Pulled real good down low at 2000 rpm. I ran a 2.92 rear gear with a T-50 5-speed. Overdrive was 0.80, so it would cruise all day at 1100-1500 rpm up our curvy mountain roads without any issues at all at about 30-40 mph. Awesome cruise set up. Speed limit was still 55 back then, so I seem to remember it getting great fuel mileage.

Curious about your fuel mileage. I think I got 25-30 mpg with my setup if I didn't engage the 4-barrel ..... sold it around '96 so I can't remember off the top of my head.
