and gradually made it to 8 degrees advanced before I got the light
from my next door neighbor. It really is better now at 12. I have
never seen a set back light you mention, and I am not sure how it
works. However, I think I have got another problem. The last trip out
I noticed the exhaust looked like I was starting it up on a cold day.
I saw steam for about 30 seconds after start up ( it was inside the
garage and it was warm weather). I think I will be sick, because I
think the head gasket did not seal. It drives fine and I see no
significant coolant loss. The exhaust clears up and looks fine in
less than a minute. I pulled the plugs and looked carefully down the
holes and #2 looks like it could be leaking (looks moist). I changed
the oil and it was clean and free of coolant. I really dread pulling
the head off again, but I will as this is the only way to fix it. Any
advice on what might cause it to not seal or how to fix it? Is this a
common problem ? I will start pulling it this weekend. Thanks

Do a thorough check before pulling the head gasket. Check the oil,
the radiator fluid, check both levels, and also check what color the
exhaust is coming out of the tailpipe. It could be a valve seal, did
you change these before installing the head. CV 0999 has 85k original
miles on it, and the valve seals are bad. On start up, blueish smoke
comes out for less than a minute, than the exhaust looks fine. YES, I
KNOW THIS IS NOT AN IDEAL WAY TO TREAT THE MOTOR, before people start
yelling here, but currently two other CV projects are underway for
me. Anyway, do a thorough check before pulling the head,

Well I did not rebuild the head as maybe I should have. This engine was
rebuilt by the previous owner agout 2000 to 2500 miles ago, it has just been
sitting for 14 years. I am pretty sure that this is coolant as it dissapates
quickly and does not stink like fuel or oil smoke. I will know in a few days
what happened. C ya, Jon Denton #0409
