Northern Alberta Canada forest fire

I don't know if we have any members here from the Fort macmurray area where the whole town of 60000 people is evacuated. But if there are any members here from that area of thoughts and prayers are with you tonight.

X2!!!! Ron, [Sunula66] is on the road right now should be near home in Ontario soon. House [For Sale] and some cars still up there but he is about 200+ Miles south and TJ [beakerstoyz] is from further south yet as I recall. Best to all. Involved this will affect many for many, many miles around, and has already caused some oil price fluctuations. Those are the ones I know of but I think there are a few way less active ones still. Prayers and a hopeful outlook To ALL! Harry

yeah, Ron's place is a ways south of there, not sure how far south though, gotta be 3 hours or so I think. I myself am somewhere around a thousand km south of there down here in Lethbridge so no worries about that one here. I, as you guys send my prayers to those affected.

watched the live feed our on Global news and was happy to see that lots of area's seemed to look just fine, I believe the fire chief said there were like 2400 structures lost of with fire damage.... but something like 25,000 survived intact. Really really great work on the part of the firefighters up there to save the whole place from going up.

Yeah it's amazing they didn't lose more than they did. I read a report that said they could have easily lost 40-50 of the city of they didn't stop it where and when they did from coming into the downtown.
In one of the pictures or videos I saw what looked like a burnt out monza coupe. Hard to say for sure but had that kind of shape and look.

Update about the fire situation...
My place is safe for the time being and both Sunbirds and Mr. GM truck can be moved in a moments notice...everyone is on high alert as this monster is still consuming hundreds of acres of forests daily and is slowly moving east/south east and quickly approaching the Saskatchewan border. I just got off the cell phone at 8:00 pm Eastern time and was given the complete update from a heavy haul buddy that came through Fort Mac around 4o'clock this afternoon...as he came in from the north down across the Athabaska River and down the big hill towards the Flying J, he told me at around 30 ft elevation he basically drove into smoke that has not left the area and lingers heavily and causes near 0 visibility. The Flying J contains burned off chassis of many tractor trailer units parked there and has completely obliterated the J and all of the tanks and pumps have sky rocketed and blown up leaving only the foundation of the truck stop! The equipment and the Hotel 8 are foundations as is the trailer park adjacent. this is only the first image as he entered town from the camp today...he was the only heavy haul truck or traffic at all for that matter running south on 63 to 50 hwy...he spoke to the owner of a house who watched in disbelief as heavy dozers and excavators pushed his home and all of the homes on his block back into the bush 150 meters into huge piles with the forest included, they used D-10's and D-11's and shoved every unburned home and it's contents including boats, cars pickup trucks etc into huge fire walls to stop the fire! His brand new Corvette was in the garage!...now mixed in the ashes...30 ft. boats and campers and motor homes were also shoved into mountains! Quite an image!!
The Fire is NOT OUT!!!...it continues to eat forests and if it turns south, well let's just not go there...Cold Lake and my area can be included...2-3 hours away means nothing..the wind will drive it and cause it to increase again in size...the help offered by Russia and other countries is needed but my stupid fukn Gov't said no...dumb asses, this can start all over again. Pray for RAIN Everybody!!...it's the only way to stop it...Mother Nature is Angry and She Can stop it now. Pray for the 88000 people who's lives are totally undone and now live on camp cots with small children and their meeger belongings!...some only having had time to grab a purse and a Cat!...their Children were Bussed out immediately and frantic Parents didn't know if their Kids were safe or not and didn't connect with them till a couple of hours later in another area. PRAY for RAIN!!!

Thanks to people like your Sister Patrick with level headed thinking that diverted tragedy! We are all very highly trained and skilled up there and some more than others obviously and who dealt with the emergency in an extremely professional way that they're training was meant for.... and even the Firefighters and the Emergency crews lost everything to save another's...that's an emotion that doesn't even enter in... :th: God Bless Them!!!
The fires still burn below the surface and will for months..when product is moved and turned it gains oxygen and sometimes can and does sound like a fireplace and or barbecue that has had a bunch of fuel in it and then ignites with a swoosh! Bryan can tell us all about the characteristics of fire. These forestfloors are 3 feet deep of pine needles and cones and underbrush and were for years undisturbed and can now burn or smolder for months, so it's still a volatile place. We need the tankers offered by the other countries but for some stupid political grounds we denied our own people and the lives of the emergency personnel an opportunity to diminish some of the workload. I don't get it.....neither do they! There are Nation wide fundraisers this weekend and will be for months to come. Ft. Mac will be rebuilt and the lives of all of the affected residents have been changed..some leaving for ever and some anxiously waiting to return and helping with the cleanup. It's a Big Mess right now as Kevin tells me and nothing to see really..no gas available yet and the Hospital and other vital services as you can imagine sit in limbow...I'm not even sure if water or any sewage is moving yet..I know ATCO has been there for a week trying to repair and replace power transmission. It's still really beautiful weather there but the stark pics of the landscape looks unrecognizable...I can't believe what my eyes tell me..I'm big on the surrounding areas with it's pristine hills and forests..I can't even begin to imagine the animal population devastated...and it will be huge. There are many species, Bears, Cougar, Moose Elk, Caribou were starting their migration and I haven't heard a remote fart of an estimation of damage to the already small and stressed Caribou heard. This fire did more ecological damage than we'll ever know and the smoke was being monitored in Indiana and Atlanta! The toxic clouds that would have emitted weren't even considered, we have lost many who breathed toxic substances burning from the Twin Towers explosion 911 and still other's suffer from inhalation trama and lung disease, another reason to evacuate the area immediately without proper breathing apparatus !..... Two people were killed as a result of trying to get away from this fire as well. They were involved in a horrific crash with a loaded logging truck and had somehow impacted with it and died. My heart dropped to learn of this and my prayers to the Family.
I'll try to watch closely but it's all up to Maw Nature now...the Humans will do what they need to in order to make that place habitable again but it's gonna take years...can't see much growing there either for a while, I know that a fertilizer compound is mixed in with the fire retardant when air dropped from the tankers flying over and releasing. This helps start the regrowth for the forest floors but a lot was just lake water...I was dowsed years ago by a bomber drop when putting out spot fires in Boston Bar on the number 1 after Jones log yard went up..Patrick you might remember that one..started by a spark from a passing train and one of it's wheels...
When it's that dry out any little ignition will work.the 3 element needed....ignition-fuel-oxygen..take one away to stop the risk...dry and hot weather are to blame as far as I'm hearing so far...this Monster was making it's own Weather.. it created massive clouds which produced 11 lightning strikes!!! people in the know have never seen such a phenominom and this fire set new records and became the Monster of all fires! Imagine a source of energy so huge it produced it's own weather!!! SCARY!!! ..the 11 lightning strikes caused more fire and was directed at itself mostly as I understand....

Rain is still needed in the region desperately. My own area where my home sits for sale is now out of the fire threat as it rained considerably yesterday. Snow was forcasted for parts of northern Alberta Friday in to Saturday but very little rain or wet snow drizzle fell around the necessary areas. They can't seem to get a break!!
Although the rain did come for some the weather continues to be a problem with high and dry temperatures for most parts...we need a good solid day or two of hard steady rains...Suncor has requested some personnel to return and that's a welcoming sign for some although I'm hearing that people are afraid to return due to the uncertainty..once burned twice smart I guess...a lot of those interviewed are not even going back and are devasted...lost everything they worked for and when they drove out through the flames and smoke licking at their vehicles they were severely traumatized. Some of the videos showed the panic. Could you imagine standing in the unaffected areas during this fire as it gets closer and the order comes for the bulldozers to start shoving these homes with their contents, cars boats and campers to be shoved into piles to create a fire block! They pushed unburned homes back into huge winrows back 150 meters into the bush and then that started burning and still did nothing...we know a guy who had a new Corvette in the garage...all of your dreams crushed and then driving away with the shirts on your backs!
I'm amazed at the support coming from all over the country and beyond! The fires are in Saskatchewan now and threatening La Loche a very northern community and populated by mostly first nations but a nice school and other immenities and sits in the path...( LaLoche was the recent scene of another tragic school shooting recently and a Police Officer murder)....Alberta is a very complex province and is diverse and yet very remote although city populations are large. The scenary is spectacular and has it's beauty on the edge of the Rockies as well. That's one of the reasons people move here and want to stay. Hunting and fishing at it's best and quadding boating and leisure activities are fantastic! Let's all keep praying for rain and relief for the people effected!!

Art, The "First Nations" people is the politically correct way to say, what used to be called [incorrectly I might add, because C. Columbus was looking for India] "Indians" I hope I worded this correctly. Harry

harry now i understand. funny thing, i bet the indians dont even mind being called indians. same thing here in america and the indians are ok with some of the sports teams with the name redskins or indians. i graduated from HS in 1961 and our sports teams were called the ossining indians. now its changed to some name other than indians. its all the liberal jerks that are thinking all this politically correct crap up. . they should stop the social engineering and maybe spend the time with their own family and stop all this bull. art

Yes Art, to be "politically" correct is to alleviate from being steriotipycal or " judgemental" and or "racist"....
:first Nations" as they wish to be recognized, still sticks in my craw but I prefer to say "Indians"....and sadly there are many who wish to do nothing to support their cause with their hands out and ask relentlessly with a degree of Entitlement causing grief for those with first nation ties to be painted with the same "Lazy" brush as their ancestors ....we are surrounded by the Indian bands and reservations in Alberta!..it's even said that they want to be recognized and expect payment from the white man forever! .....umm, not any respect from me with this attitude and if you choose to live in these renegade outposts and your residence burns down...you chose that style of life. It's sad for the young ones as they struggle to leave the reservations there as the future without a decent education severely limits them to job opportunity. I worked alongside a fella that explained that after years of handing over his paychecks to the band counsel and given a meager allowance, he finally got smart and left and moved to town to the real world! He's an awesome Dude!....I would still like to maintain that we all are first nations people!! direct decendants from the same settlers and "Vikings" that first walked here!! with all of the fires we all need to pull together and not sit with our legs crossed and our doors and hands open thinking that whatever happens next will be solved as the good gracious government and it's stupid generosity and it being the "enabler", will come to their rescue...didn't know of too many Indians running up there to help out other than the Wandering River area ones that actually did help others. Kudos to them!!!
The fires continue as 1000 more relief fire fighters from Ontario and other provinces including the USA, Australia and other Countries are expected to arrive any day now. Welcome and GOD Bless :th:

The Lac La Biche fire is now under control!!! This one is about 45 minutes NW of my area....my area received a good soaking rain on the weekend...Hooray!...going out soon to retrieve my one Sunbird.....maybe both if time permits...house still sits for sale.... :bang:

Final update....well, the rains finally came!!!
Last weekend it poured and the area of Ft. Mac. received it's deluge as Fire Fighters from Africa arrived!!! Africa! Holy Crapp! :th:
As some 15000 folks arrive, the heart wrenching stories emerge from those teary-eyed residents taking the time to express themselves to the reporters...
There is a website on the Alberta wildfire management and it contains the latest updates with info for the Ft. Mac residents. They estimate some 35000 will start trickling in this week and many have already expressed concerns for infrastructure not being safe for kids ie: drinking water and such..ground with contaminants above the surface etc. You can't expect to let your kids out to play. Many have seen their ashes which remain and have opted to get the cheque and leave the area for good.
Can't blame them for this. The Hospital I'm told is functioning well and the power is restored to many. However, the sites most effected are a stark reminder of what took place and have forever changed the landscapes and people's lives forever. Suncor still needs it's employees to get back into the work routine but is experiencing difficulty in meeting demands for the Petro Canada stations from Saskatchewan to British Columbia! Fuel prices will continue to rise and in Calgary, it has done just that. We will all pay for this fire some way. I'm happy to say that the threat to humans is down, as far as fires, but the fire threat continues in the remote wild areas and that the wild life remains the most effected in our forests. Fires still burn in the remote regions but are getting some relief from scattered rains, all be it some is better than no rain at all. I know that there are a number of fires still burning, not sure of the exact numbers...

Please continue to Hope and Pray for a speedy recovery for our neighbors in the North. Thanks to all on this board who have expressed their well wishes and support and God Bless the Emergency Personnel from all of the Countries that helped and continue to support the many who remain and are still involved. :th: :th:
