Alternator wiring/fusible link

Postby 78spyder » Mon Jul 16, 2012 12:44 am

I had a no charge issue, and since I was going to be putting a sepentine drive and another alternator in, I figured i would wait to see what happens, well, new alts in and still no charge. Where does the main red wire on alt go to, does it end on starter? Also, is there a fusible link on this wire? And if so, which end is it on? I touched a screwdriver to the back of the alternator and it wasnt magnetic ( a quick way to see if its making juice when no voltmeter is present ). Would it not produce the magnetic field if the fuseable link is burned out (assuming it has one)? Thanks a bunch!

usually go to the horn relay and to the starter , then uses the batt cable to get back to the battery

been so long i forget which end the link is on , but it is at the very end on of the line , also its alot more flexible then the the rest of the line

Only the early Vega's had the fusible link at the horn relay; on the later cars it's at the starter. if it's burned out it killls everything, not just the alternator. Don't overlook the other possibility; if the idiot light is burned out(or unplugged) in the cluster the alternator won't turn on. Get a hold of a meter or test light and check the smaller brown wire on the 2-pin plug; it should show power when the key is on. The 2 red wires(both the one on the post and the one in the 2-pin plug) join together inside the harness about a foot or so from the alternator.

Wow, thats a bummer a burned out idiot light would zap the charging system. Thats irony. I'll check that out too. Thanks guys.
