Fuel Pump Wiring

Postby BBM66 » Tue Jul 30, 2013 11:05 pm

73 hatchback changing over to v-8 with an external Holley Blue fuel pump and using Auto Meter Fuel gauge. Okay, My plan here is to use the stock wiring for the stock fuel pump to both power the pump and the gauge. I followed the blue and tan wire from the back to the front and while the tan wire for the gauge is easily traced and I know where it is for the gauge, the Blue wire travels the same path, only to be turned into a PINK wire at the connector under the dash and then into the main plug. From there, the Pink wire travels behind the dash and, at least as far as I can tell, acts as a common power wire, supplying power to dash lights, gauges and even the stereo. So, am I crazy, or is that the case. If so, how is that even possible. Does the blue wire terminate at that connector, or is that where it starts, powered by the pink wire to the rear of the car? if so, can I run a jump wire to a switch from the blue wire to power the pump?
I know this is a convoluted question, I'm just trying to figure out how to use those wires, so I dont have to run more wires. Anny help or advice would be awesome! Thanks a lot!

The blue fuel pump wire should go through the fuse box and then out under the hood to the oil pressure switch. It's connected to the purple(start) when there's no pressure, and when there is pressure, it switches over to the pink(ignition). All 3 of these wires are fairly large(14 or 12 ga.) and in a rubber plug.

I wouldn't do that, look at the wiring for the pump and Holley says to use a 12ga wire with a 15 amp fuse. The pump is rated at 7.5 amps but to be safe I would use 10ga wire.

There are so many variables and options but I wouldn't trust old small wiring (16ga) with a 10 amp fuse.

Is your battery staying in the stock location? Brian

I'm planning on using the stock wire to turn on a relay to power up the pump.

Here is a drawing I did that allows the protection of the Oil Pressure Switch and uses the IGN terminal on the fuse block so the Key will shut the circuit off. Something to look at.

The pic is from a 77 Skyhawk so I don't know if the same connector would be used on your car but you can see the blue wire with the white stripes. This DWS blue wire is from the fuse box and if you look at the top of the connector it is solid blue and that is the wire going back to the fuel pump. Just under the dash and easy enough to get too. Thanks for all the good info fellas, it really helps. I think what I'm going to do is read up on how to transfer the battery to the back of the car, install an external fuse outlet and power source off the radiator support and run the pump, fans and whatever else from there via switches to the dash. Thanks again for the response.
