Yet another wiring question!

Postby BBM66 » Sat Aug 10, 2013 7:47 pm

A person with the slightest degree of organization would label each and every wire when they are taking something apart, right?? Oh no, not me!! So, I once again reach out to you guys to solve my problem, which wouldn't be a problem IF.....

Here is a picture of part of one of the interior wiring harnesses. These wires are part of the same harness that connect to the steering column and reach to the passenger side of the car. As there is a light bulb, my only guess is that it goes to the glove compartment, but I dont think so, because the wires are grey and black, which are switched, not constant power (I could be wrong) The second pic is a singular wire that I also can't place.
Anyway, if you know where these wires connect. please help me out. The car is a 73 vega. was an air conditioned car, but no longer. Thanks fellasZ!

The purple and purple/white pair go to the neutral safety switch, and the pink and green go to the back up light switch; both found on the shifter. The gray and black on the light socket are for the shift indicator. The others may or may not be for the A/C, but I've never had a Vega with air.

Brown is usually switched accessory power; don't recall ever seeing that particular wire/connector in any of my cars or diagrams. You could look through all the diagrams that Senior Savage posted; there may be A/C ones there.

Is the E brake by the shifter like the later cars (2nd gen). I think mine has a brown wire on the hand E brake. Brian

Yes, mine has a brown wire as well, which I think goes to the e-brake Brian. The other brown wire pictured, the one with the funny looking connector, is one under the dash and not part of that harness in the first picture.

The wiring diagrams list the e-brake wire as "tan", and that's the color I remember; but the brown wire in the first pic has the right connector on it and it's about the right length to go under the carpet to the e-brake. The plug with the pink and pink/white I believe to be for a seat belt buzzer switch that may or may not be present on the neutral safety/back up light switch. If you're using the OEM shifter, feel free to NOT plug it back in; if you're going aftermarket, there won't be any provisions for it anyway.
As to the second pic, that wire has a male spade in it which usually means that it's supposed to plug onto another wire that feed power into it. Still not sure if it has something to do with the A/c or not; as I noted before, the dark brown color would suggest that it would be accessory power.
