Help! Hacked up wire harness.

Postby CaptainPainn » Sat May 31, 2014 2:25 am

In my build thread i mentioned that this wire harness is a mess. This will likely be a long thread, as i need much help and there are many unknown wires. I've been using some wire diagrams i printed off from v8monza.com, but i cant find the page again. They help immensely but still aren't very clear. For those who are willing to help, thanks, and stick with me here. Ill start off with what should be some pretty simple ones. Wire harness is from a 1975 Vega GT hatchback.

The connector in the bottom photo is for the ignition coil. One side is power, the other side goes to the distributor and tach.

Thanks for the wire diagrams. They helped me find a few more wires. I found the orange wire in the second picture, it goes to the heater fan. Can anyone show a picture of what the ignition coil connector looks like installed?

Pink(ign+) & green(to back up lights) are the reverse light switch; goes to the trans if manual, or to the shifter if automatic.
Yellow(acc+), gray(dash light +) black(ground) plug into the back of the OEM radio.

Looks like a GM external coil connector - fat wire feeds power to coil.

if you use an HEI distributor you only need the 2 wires that come out of the Vega coil connector, the black part is for the module to coil wires.

If that black plugin goes to the coil, then where does this red wire go? Also need help finding this wire that it cut off just a couple inches past the fuse box. It is a tan or light brown wire and is not hot.

Also have some other electrical problems. I cannot get the starter to engage by the key. I got all the starter wires on correctly. I can engage it with a screwdriver by crossing the terminals. I know the key is doing something, because when i turn it to start the radio turns off and the turn signals stop working. I have a problem with the wipers. The motor is good and there's power to the wires. When i tun the switch on the wipers do nothing. Yet, if i move the wipers to the up position by hand, and then plug the connector on, the motor engages and returns the wipers to the down position. Also, when i turn the switch on the dash lights tun on. In the picture wire1, i showed a brown wire with a connector on it. When i put the test light on the wire and the other end on the body, the light turns on. When i complete the circuit, there is a click under the dash. When i break the circuit, it clicks again. I have traced the clicking to somewhere around the steering column where the wires plug into it, and it is not the turn signal clicker. The pink wire in wire4 fell against the body and poped a fuse. Anyone know which one it is? The blinkers don't work since the fuse poped.

The large red wire should be hot at all times and is usually clipped to the firewall; it's used to feed some optional equipment such as an underhood light. The tan wire is the "low brake fluid" wire that plugs onto the proportioning valve.
As to your "no start" issue, the starter wire is interrupted by either a neutral safety switch(automatic trans) or a clutch pedal switch(manual). Two pin connector with large purple and purple/white wires.
Wipers? They "park" so the fuse is ok, but the switch provides ground to do the different speeds; you may have a black ground wire not screwed in somewhere under the dash.
Way back to "wires1", the brown(probably tan) looks like it's long enough to go under the carpet to the parking brake lever, and the white/black pair along with it to the driver's seat belt buckle.
The fuse you blew when the pink/white touched ground could be labeled "turn", "signal" or "back up" I just don't remember it's exact placement in the box.

The wire harness is manual but the car will be automatic. Is there any way i can bypass the neutral start, or does it have to be connected?

There should be some provisions for a neutral safety switch(and back up light switch) on whatever shifter you use, be it OEM or aftermarket. it might be ok to bypass it temporarily for testing, but the car should not be driven without it. WAAAAY too dangerous to have a car that will start in gear.

Fixed the wipers. Was a ground not screwed in. Plugged the tan wire into the E brake, but don't see any thing to plug the other connector into. Even took the seat out. Still cant find the neutral safety switch or the wires to it.

What "other connector" are you you referring to?
If the harness was originally in a manual trans car, there would be a clutch switch(instead of an automatic's neutral safety switch) up under the dash with the purple and purple/white in a two pin plug.

I can not find the purple/purple-white wires for the safety switch. They are either not there, or have somehow eluded me. Got some more wires that i need help with. These are all behind and around the dash.
