radiator

Postby wdwisser » Thu Oct 18, 2018 4:55 pm

All,
I have finally gotten my V8 into my 79 Monza... Yay!!

I was trying to line up the radiator and I noticed that the "mounts" where the radiator sits on the bottom do not line up with the radiator tanks. The car was originally a 4 cylinder and that radiator is a little shorter and the "mounts" are welded to the bottom of the support from the factory. I was also trying to use the original cooling lines but those don't line up either. Also, there is a piece that blocks part of the radiator area and I'm assuming I can cut that out for the wider V8 radiator?

Any suggestions on how others have set theirs up. I have some original V8 radiators from Monza's so I would like to use them if I could and pictures would be great.

Hi Bill, I was waiting to see if someone else on the forum might pipe in and have better info than I have. I don't have a 4 cyl car. What I do have is two factory 6 cyl cars one of which had a SBC in it previously and now has an empty engine bay waiting for me to drop my SBC into it. I also have an original copper V8 radiator and an original copper V6 radiator. From what I can see it looks like the V6 and V8 radiator widths are the same as the welded in lower radiator supports have not been moved on the car that had the V8 in it. I can take some pictures of the mounting positions and rad opening if it would help you ar all. I would guess the best thing to do would be to fab up some new lower rad mounts or use a spot weld cutter and cut the spot welds on the factory mounts and relocate them as needed to fit the V8 radiator.

79MonzaSpyder,
thanks for the reply. Some pictures may help me. I'm getting the radiator looked at now to make sure it is good and i'll be dropping it in. The car is in nice shape i'd hate to cut into it for something simple like this. Let me know what you can get me picture wise. The spot weld cutter i am thinking about but just want to be sure i'm doing it right.

Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill, I'm out of town till the middle of next week. I already took some pictures of the placement of the rad supports and the rad opening. I will post them here or if you want to give me an email address I can probably send you higher resolution pics than I can post here, might help for clarity. And then if you want other pics or angles let me know. When I'm home the front of the car is fairly accessible.

Back in the day I had a 77 Monza coupe that had a 4 cylinder in it. The extra panel to block off the space for the smaller 4 cylinder radiator was removable, and it had an extra lower mount that was the correct width for the V8 radiator. Maybe I had an odd-ball, but the radiator issues were not a problem.

Horizontally, on the sides of the core support, you might be able to get away with opening it up an inch on both sides if you need the opening, however, along the bottom of that opening, didnt open ours up, but we did weld a hardened steel bedrail across for extra support between the "frame rails" at that spot. We modified a stock vega radiator to 3 core and resized the hose opening at a radiator shop that had been in business for 60 years. We fabricated an upper and lower plate to mount the bottom of the radiator. The top plate is what the electric fan mounts to.

Hi Bill,
This is what I took for radiator mounting position pictures and the opening of the radiator support. If you need a picture at a different angle or with a measuring tape in place let me know. I downsized the pictures to get them posted here. The originals are 1.5-2.0 MB each so if you need/want the higher resolution pictures you can give me a e-mail address and I can send them directly to you. Hope this helps and if I can help with any other pictures or measurements let me know.
