Step 1 remove transmission, step 2 figure out what step 3 is! This will be fun! Clyde, you were right...I'm getting too old for this!

Ok, the transmission is mostly apart...any hints on how to remove the 1st gear bearing and gear? Rubber mallet and a lot of whacking?

This is the one supposedly "pressed" on but I was able to remove by carefully wedging a couple large screwdrivers between the gear and bearing and wedging it off. It may take a little tapping.....make sure the C clip is removed first.

As I thought a bit more I remembered that I put the assembly in my vice with the bearing facing up. I rested the 1st/2nd gear on the vice jaws and then tapped the mainshaft with a rubber mallet to pull it off. Be careful when the bearing comes loose as the assembly will fall on the ground.

The transmission is back together with some help from a local shop...I'm wasn't organized enough to do it myself it turns out! It's now primed and ready for paint, is there a factory specific colour it should be? Or can I paint it whatever colour I have enough of in my cupboard?

Sorry to hear you weren't able to complete the rebuild yourself. Happy to hear it's together though. I originally had my trans painted black but after the last rebuild I changed it to a cast gray. Unless you are a purist I would say paint it whatever color suits you but I think the cast gray looks real nice. It looks a little darker in the pic, but you get the idea. If anyone is interested in my complete thread on the Saginaw rebuild you can check it out here viewtopic.php?f=8&t=40581

Transmission paint it drying, some I'm getting ready to start the bodywork. First silly question...is there a proper way to remove the Monza badges? I was going to get in behind them with a screwdriver and pry them off but thought I should ask first!

Rick that should have 2(?) pins with speed nuts on that if it is as delivered from the General. Prying would have made that into a 3 piece design! So Good call! However most body shops when reinstalling these if the fender wasn't off would cut the tabs and 3M taped them back on. Harry

You may have to loosen the inner plastic fender liner and reach in there if they still have the nuts attached. Some emblems also use barrel clips where the emblem just push in from the outside. You can try and gently pry the emblem but I do believe the originals had nuts on the back. It may depend if they have ever been removed before.

OK the transmission is back in and about to be filled...I just wanted to check with the experts to see if anything looks wrong. The picture of the shifter linkages is not the greatest I know but they are my biggest concern. One other thing...what is the box-like thing attached at the tail-end of the tranny?

Thanks, Rick

Rick that looks like an exhaust hanger for the "Cat" on our cars if my memory serves me well today. Harry

So without a Catalytic converter it's not necessary, correct?
