Chug-Chug

Postby monzacoupe » Sun May 17, 2020 10:20 am

Hi all! My car is running fine Most of the time...I have a problem when I accelerate with authority entering the freeway. The engine starts chugging and stuttering like its getting too much or not enough gas. Normal driving in the neighborhood and streets it's accelerating fine just at 45+ mph on the freeway. Any suggestions where I should start looking? I just changed out the air filter(completely clogged!) and will squirt some carb cleaner down there today.

Start with basics, fuel filter, plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor etc. You may want to also check your ignition timing and the advance weights under the distributor rotor to make sure they are free and not sticking. If the air filter was completely plugged as you say then it is likely that there has not been a lot of maintenance done on the car. Once you do this let us know how it is running and we can go from there..........

My old Bonneville did that before back when I lived in Arizona, it was the carb was clogged up by the ethanol in the gas and eaten the rubber lines, might have to clean the inside of the carb and change the fuel lines and filter.

Every third oil change or 9000 miles the fuel filter should be changed on average.

I always write with a Sharpie or paint pen when the last date and mileage it was changed.

Hi,I had a similar issue back when i had my second Vega. Turns out the distributor bearings were shot.

Glad you got it running better. So, air filter completely clogged and fuel filter obviously clogged as well. Sounds like there has not been any preventative maintenance done on this car so a complete tuneup is probably still in order.

Hey Rick, also tear off the rotor in the distributor, and check for any tell tale electrical arc tracks, HEI's have some common issues with age. Check all the plastic bushings in the advance mechanism it is common to crumble and cause some high voltage to leak out, therby higher rpm performance suffers. Harry;
