Vega GT?

Postby ol55 » Sat Feb 09, 2013 8:42 am

Hello,
I just purchased a '73 Vega that I am wondering if it is a GT? Does the GT have a different Body #.

Hope to post pics in the spring...

Thanks,

Couple things to check, full gauges, front and rear anti-roll bars, custom interior, four spoke wheels with trim rings, two barrel Holey carb, chrome ring around egg-crate grill, handgrip on passenger side of dash. I think those were all standard on the GT, probably others.

Also clear lens parking light lenses(non-GT had amber lenses).

As far as I know there isn't anything in the VIN that states without a doubt that it is a GT. The body tag may have the Z29 option, but from what I know Z29 is a special GT option with higher end custom interior and a maybe a few other items (wood grain door panels, sport mirrors, and not sure what else). Just 'cause it doesn't have the Z29 option doesn't mean it isn't a GT.

I have two 72 GT Kammbacks, one has Z29 on the Tag and it came with a hood stripe and lower color to match (not sure if that was part of the Z29 option), deluxe interior panels with wood grain, and sport mirrors (look similar to sport mirrors on later models, but doesn't have the cable to control it from inside the car). The other GT Kammback is just one solid color.

Thanks. I was thinking it might be like some of the SS's and have it's own code. Just realized it has (aluminum?) trim around the windows and I thought that might be GT only...

According to my 1973 Chevrolet Vega parts book, RPO Z29 was the only GT Sport option. The custom interior was RPO ZJ1. The custom exterior was RPO ZJ2.

Question is "What differentiates the GT Sport option from a regular GT?"

Both my 72 Kammbacks are GTs, but only one has Z29 on the tag.

Ken,
There was no such vega as a "Sport GT" On the cars original build sheet it had an RPO Z29 for a "GT" or not, else-wise it was a stock Vega. A stock Vega could have been ordered with all the GT standard equipment as single stand alone options including the gauge package, sport steering wheel, custom exterior and the ralley suspension to name a few. A well optioned stock Vega would have been a few dollars less than the GT. Only difference at new was the GT emblem in the horn button and the GT emblems on the front fenders. With all the alterations of most Vegas over 40 years old, the only real way to know a real GT is by the RPO codes on a build sheet if it still exists. In the early years of the Vega, These stand alone options added to a stock Vega made for profits for the dealers, and were much more common than in the later years.

I have two 72 Vega GT Kammbacks and one has Z29 on the body tag (not the build sheet) and the other doesn't. I have seen at least a dozen early Vega GTs and this is the only one I have seen with Z29 on the body tag.

These is what the one with Z29 on the body tag has that the other doesn't:

Wood panel trim interior.
Dual color with hood stripe.
Sport mirrors (I have never seen a 72 with these so can't be positive they came with them although I removed them and all looks original).

Does anybody else out there have or seen Z29 on the body tag of a Vega, or have a clue why it is only printed on only some body tags?

another item to look for is the lens covers in the front lower valence. The regular Vegas they were amber lenses....in the GT they were clear.

The reason I prefaced my reply with "According to my 1973 Chevrolet Vega parts book" is because that is what GM defined RPO Z29 as. True, there was no "GT Sport" Vega, but it is how the book defines RPO Z29. Remember, an ashtray in a chevy parts book is referred to as a "receiver". I have never seen Z29 on an ID tag, but that would be cool. The only place I know of that lists all the options is the factory build sheet.

Is that information written in stone? I would like to verify that. Never say never.

yes GT lenses were clear, base lenses were amber.
GT cars have trim under the rear quarter windows and under the door glass, base models do not.
My Vega is a GT but I changed the clear lenses out for amber ones, I like the amber better with the color of my car.

It's written in the sales brochures from Chevrolet at that time. The GT package,('71-'73), had anti sway bars, different spring rates, 13x6 inch wheels, instrument cluster, a passenger side grab handle, black grill, clear turn signal lenses, and GT badging. Except for the GT badging, every one of those options was available on a non-GT Vega. The '74 and up cars had a black headlight bezel surround. The custom interior was not standard with the GT package.
