Question about export Monza’s?

Postby Dmoss » Thu Feb 04, 2021 6:32 am

Hi,

I’m located in Australia and am looking at building a 76 Monza for road racing.

There is a car available here that appears to be factory built as a right hand drive. It looks to have been here since the early 1980’s.

Monza’s were not sold here. So, does anyone know if Monza’s were built in RHD and exported outside the US?

Thanks

Doug

There where a couple of owners here from Australia a ways back, only one I know currently is Simon on the Monza Madness Facebook page.

Not sure on the import stuff, sorry.

Wikipedia has some info on the Monza use in Australian racing but it said the cars were imported.

I know a lot of H bodies were made in Canada for 76. If yours was then you could order a resto pack from Vintage vehicle services and it should tell you the order build history of the car. Not sure but I think California and Canada were the two places of manufacture for H's in 76. You should be able to tell from the VIN where it was made.

If the build sheet for the car is found I do know that RPO V78 was the code for a "Plate-Less Certif of Export C" and that 149 Monza's got this (I'm assuming this would confirm the car was exported).

Not much but hope it helps, keep us posted on what you find.

RPO V78 was the code for a "Plate-Less Certif of Export C

If I had to guess this is referring to the body tag.

I bought a 75 Monza that was sold in Europe. The data plate does not have the added " This car complies with all regulations at time of manufacture" info and there is an added sticker on radiator support stating car built for export and does not comply with us emissions. (only difference I see is lack of catalytic converter).
