Pitman Arm

Postby OldsStarfire » Fri May 14, 2021 2:37 pm

Can you guys help me sort out this pitman arm mystery? I'm looking to use either a Lars 1276 manual steering box or Classic Performance 400 Series Vega Power Steering Box. Both have a 1-1/8" output shaft. What Pitman arm should I use on my formerly power steering equipped 77 Starfire?

The pitman arm off a large manual steering box that came in v6/v8 or cosworth cars. I believe it was also used on the 605 series power steering box which has a round top cover with a snap ring holding it in place. What happened with the pitman arm the guy on facebook said he had?

do you have a picture of the interference between the exhaust and steering?

the 1276 manual box is going to put the coupler in the exact same place as with your power box. Depending upon where the interference is I would possibly look at one of the short input manual borgeson boxes or a vega manual box. The stock vega box is rated for approx 2500 lb cars. the 400 series power box is rated for 3000lb and the larger manual box is rated for full size cars so I am guessing 4000 lb.

I've already replaced the coupler with a small u joint. Yes I am in contact with Jay and he has a cosworth pitman arm but it has the same casting number as my power steering arm. From reading apparantly this is common. I asked for measurements of the spline but it also appeared to be the same. Hence this post.

it is the same casting but it is machined differently for the the slightly smaller spline than what is on you ps pitman arm. The spline is also tapered. you have to measure both sides.

If you read the reviews at bottom, guy says he used cpp power vega box using stock cosworth pitman arm. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/clp-vega-psb

Fit perfect without the back spacer. The OEM pit-man fit perfect but it's a Cosworth not a standard Vega. Replaced the rag joint with a universal joint, all fit great.
