Winching onto trailer

Postby STAGNATION » Sat Oct 30, 2021 12:49 pm

Hello, I have a 75 project Vega in storage that I am trying to get back home. It is not running and I will need to get it up on a trailer. I was looking in the internet for places I could connect to for winching and came across this picture. Is this hole I have circled in red specific for a tow strap? Do all Vegas have this or only certain years? Is there a better location? It would just be be loading this with no pushing help.

That hole looks to be the one for connecting the linkage to the front sway bar. I'm guessing you might bend it if you use that spot to pull it, especially since it's off center.

I'd just loop the tow strap or a chain around the front k-member or the brace under the engine, and position the strap near the center. These cars are pretty light, so it shouldn't take much to move it.

I saw a hole in the top of that bracket and pictures of front sway bars mounted there. The larger hole in the side though looks very conveniently put there, like it is asking for a tow hook to be connected there. The car has a 350 in it currently so there is a little more weight in front.

Definitely use the K-member under engine support.
I use an axle strap around it so the winch cable/hook doesn't have to wrap around it.
Axle straps come in real handy......

A nylon strap works if you don't have an axle strap available. Also on the K-member under the engine .

Why not winch it up rear end first? Use a nylon tow strap around the axle housing out near the spring hangers and under the brake line. :th:

Thanks for the replies, been a few months but getting serious about fetching this out of storage. I had a moment when I entertained selling it, but a low offer on a sentimental object kind of made me determined to get this back on the road. Sounds like the spot marked in red is what you are suggesting? I want to load from the front to keep the weight stable on the uhaul trailer.

Harbor freight has a deal on a winch, and looking.at making a portable winch mount with chains like this since they don’t make them any more

Yes, that's the spot. Even if loading it onto the trailer by yourself, these cars are usually pretty easy to winch up onto a trailer.

Hopefully the rear brake drums are not frozen. How long has it been in storage? Does it roll freely?

I don't like using the sway bar to pull the car [and I have done this] I have a twin lead cable I hook to the unibody below the pedal box, oval holes. I'll try finding a picture. Harry

Harry, he's not hooking onto the sway bar, but the k-member instead. I thought too the red mark was an arrow at first, until I expanded the picture.

The car has been sitting in storage for 12 years, not climate controlled but out of the elements for the most part besides humidity. The drums were new when it was parked The front is facing the storage door and the passenger side tire is dry rotted the last time I was there and will need replaced before can see if it will roll. I will definitely be bringing PB blaster, good size hammer, along with an assortment of other tools and hope for the best. I am having to rent a uhaul and trailer so I need to hope for the best that it will go smooth.

The winch I got is a 2500 Zxr from harbor freight. I am looking at a snatch block and 36” long axle strap to get around the k member.

A "snatch" block is a great idea! Weather you need the extra "Grunt" or not the snatch block will increase your duty cycle significantly [mid power level around 4X's] this will help with you not needing to stop halfway up the ramps to wait for your winch to cool just make sure all your "parts" are rated accordingly! You said 2500# winch so a stall of near 300# times 2 means 6000# mount straps shackles etc. Harry
