What is this? Sheetmetal Near Hatch Area By Tail Lights

I'm trying to understand what these sheetmetal objects are directly behind the vent/grill portion of the rear interior trim panel, near the tail lights. Any ideas?

OK, so I'm going to leave the original link since it is hilarious (futuristic space girl?), but apparently I'm too old to use Imgur. Let's try again, with the actual picture of the sheetmetal. The piece I'm talking about is poking out from the sound insulation (you can see the spring on it).
