Trans tunner filler for 4speed??

Postby sz3gfj » Tue Sep 12, 2023 2:58 pm

I'm converting a 1980 Sunbird from an auto trans to a 4 speed. The auto trans version has a filler plate over the hole in the trans tunnel, which has mounting provisions for the shifter, shifter cable, and console. See pics. Does the 4 speed have a similar filler for the trans tunnel> If so, does someone have pics? Where can I find one? Thanks for all help!

Yes, there is one specifically for the 4-speed, and one specifically for the 5-speed trans. It really wouldn't be hard to make one, though.

I think this is what you mean, the 4 speed shifter mounts to this plate.

Clyde,

That looks like the plate for a console. The '76 and '77 Vegas (and others, I assume) had a bolt-on plate that opened up a large hole in the floor, exposing the transmission. I discovered when I had my '76 Cosworth that there were different plates for the 4-speed and the 5-speed, with the shifter opening in slightly different locations. I assume the automatic had another different plate, as they were cable-operated by then.
