Monza with s10 spindles and Chrysler ball joints

Postby kris0082 » Fri Jul 23, 2021 3:50 pm

Hey I have a monza someone added Chrysler screw in ball joints and I don’t know what to order to replace them. Does anyone know what Chrysler ball joint will fit in a s10 spindle? I saw a guy on here named smiley that was asking about this subject if you know him please see if he can help me.

Hey Kris, Smiley will check in, patients is important now, traffic is way down here and most of us only check in every couple of days for most. I might suggest that you take one of your arms/ball joints to a "Speed Shop" that caters to the Roundy Round [circle track] aficionados amongst us "Motorheads" those Chryco screw in joints are pretty common there, they will likely have some on the shelf for you to compare to. Harry https://us.bicknellracingproducts.com/s ... BALL+JOINT as an example.

As Harry mentioned, Chrysler ball joints are common in the stock car circles (no pun intended).
Chrysler used two sizes of screw in joints. A large one for the bottom and a small one for the upper. Establishing which you have will help. Are they installed in both upper and lower arms?
I used a weld in sleeve for the small Chrysler joint in my lower arms. I then bought a Howe Racing XD housing and a stud for the bottom of a Nova spindle (the upper joint is a different size  ). I used a standard Nova upper ball joint. Howe has a huge selection of ball joint bodies and studs, all available separately.
Once you have identified the size of your joints (large vs small) send an email to Howe Racing telling them what you have. They can tell you what parts you need to mount your S10 spindles. I found them to be very quick with a response.
While you are shopping buy the proper ball joint socket for installing them.

I’ve been to one speed shop in my area that does dirt track racing and they couldn’t match it up. Ive talked with speed way, Jegs, and summit racing but they wanted measurements and the machine shop I talked with that deals with dirt track cars wasn’t interested in measuring the old ball joint. I tried getting a ball joint from a 77 Chrysler volare but the shank was to big. The car already had s10 upper ball joints so they were easy to find.

Measure the body of the ball joint. The large joint has a body diameter of (approximately) 2" and the small joint has a diameter of (approximately) 1 3/4".
After you have established the size of your ball joints get in touch with Howe Racing. Tell them you need a (large or small) Chrysler screw in joint body with a S10 lower stud. They will give you the part numbers you need to order.

There is also the possibility that someone reamed out the S10 spindle to accept a standard Chrysler ball joint stud. If that is the case then a parts store joint would do the job, but first you have to establish whether you have a large or small ball joint.

I didn't see this until now, I have blueprints at work. I'll check the stud sizes of the Chrysler joints vs the S-10 on Monday.

Thank you Chuck, I know the pitch is supposed to be different on Chrysler and Chevy ball joints. The Chrysler are 7* and the Chevy are 10* I believe, but I’m not sure how much that effects anything. Thank you once again for the help.

You are correct: the S-10 studs are 10 degree and the Chrysler ones are 7. You cannot mix the two, as you won't get the proper seating in the knuckle. Hopefully, the spindles were modified for the correct taper. Here are the stud dimensions:

S-10 upper (K5208 Moog): 0.510" small taper diameter, 0.632" large taper diameter, 10 degree
S-10 lower (K6145T): 0.628" s/t, 0.786" l/t, 10 degree

Popular Chrysler thread-in joints:
K704: 0.505" s/t, 0.592" l/t, 7 degree, 1.636" major diameter of the thread on the body of the joint
K772: 0.600" s/t, 0.711" l/t, 7 degree, 1.820" major diameter
K778: 0.673" s/t, 0.791" l/t, 7 degree, 2.019" major diameter

Your measurements are pretty close to a 778 joint.
How tight was the fit between the spindle and ball joint when you disassembled them?

Hey everyone I sent my old ball joint to Howe and they told me what ball joint to order. They said it was moog k727 or Howe 22418. So now I can finally get this front suspension back together. Thank for you help.
