suspension tune-up

Postby monzacoupe » Thu Nov 14, 2019 5:17 pm

Hey everyone! I'm considering a tune-up of my front suspension this winter. Is there a standard list of parts needed/suggested for this project? My car is steering fairly straight, steering wheel is not quite centered when going in a straight line. There are a few rattles when going over bumps. I was thinking I would need
control arm bushing
ball joints
tie-rods
shock absorbers

Anything else?

Rick

P.S. Any suggestions on where to get these? Rock Auto seems to have most of them

The parts you listed are a great way to get the front end back to original condition. There are a few parts you left out including idler arm and centerlink along with sway bar end links and grommets. Getting the lower cam bolts out could be a challenge but it is sort of a right to passage among H body owners. Rebuilding a front end is not a lot of fun, (I am doing my buddy's 1958 Chevy Yeoman wagon right now) but it does go a long way to restore the drive quality and handling.

Thanks Clyde! I talked to Performance Suspension Tech. today and their rebuild kit includes the sway bar parts you suggested. Center link and other part will have to be found, then clear the parts cost with Mrs. Monzacoupe!

The suspension parts should be here this week!
K-member question!
While the car is up on stands I'm doing a few other things like tracking down and patching an oil drip and cleaning up and painting parts. One of those parts is the K-member, is there an issue with me removing the K-member for a few days while the car is on jack stands?

Use chassis points for jack stands, not suspension area, possible front chassis spread.

Getting there! I'm about to join the control arm bushing bolt cutting gang and I'm wondering if these bolts are rare. A quick search show quite a few listed at Summit, do I trust them? Or are these lovely cars needing a VERY specific bolt?

Also...I'm looking into my future and seeing a nightmare of a time getting at the upper control arm bolts on the driver's side! Any tricks or wisdom about how to get at the one under the brake booster would be appreciated!!!

I did that one from under the car. Not bad at all from there. I did use a ratchet wrench, it was short enough and the bends were right to clear everything. It was only a couple clicks at a time but better than having to turn remove wrench, put it back on, turn, repeat....

Ok, now to find a 15/16" ratchet wrench!

I used a long handle 1/2” flex head ratchet with a deep socket on the ones toward the firewall.
