Panhard bar attachment

Postby Lars » Thu Jan 16, 2020 3:28 am

I have a 75 Monza with 262 and Th350 and since i am thinking of upgrading to 350 engine and at the same time change rear axle to a late 76-80 7.5 with a 5 lug conversion. I wonder if the panhard bar attachment points differ on the axle or on the chassi? 76-80 have a straight bar whereas the 75 is bent.

The bracket on the rearend is definitely different as the angle matches the curved bar. The frame mount on a 75 is welded, I believe the later ones are bolted on. Not sure how a straight bar will line up with 75 frame mount. What is the reason for just not upgrading the 75 rearend to 5 bolt and later rear brakes?

I did upgrade the brakes many years ago, but as i understand it the rear axle is a 6.5 according to the literature.
However this might not be true in all cases. Are there any visiable signs or do i have to check the tag or stamping on the axle?
My thoughts was to while i am upgrade the engine i might as well upgrading the rear axle to be able to cope with the torque and since 13 inch tires being rare today, do a 5 lug conversion.

My 75 with the 262 V8 had the 7.5" rear. If you look at the way the torque arm is bolted to the rear it is one way to identify the rear. If it uses 2 very long bolts it should be a 7.5". If it attaches with 4 short bolts, 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom, it is a 6.5". 1975 was the first year for the 7.5" rear and I always thought all Monza's had that rear. Some people have said some came with 6.5's. What literature makes you believe it is a 6.5?

I checked my rear axle last night and according to your information as well as the service and overhaul manual supplement for 1976 Vega and Monza, mine should be a 7.5 .
I recieved the info about 6.5 rear axle from this site
http://h-body.org/library/hbodyfaq/hbod ... codes.html
I may have misinterpreted it since it not full clear if it only applies to Vega. On this differential identifaction site(see below) they depict a 6.5 Vega as well as 7.5 Vega, Monza diff covers and mine looks like the one used on the 6.5. That info together gave me some headache about the identity of my rear axle. I am happy to be able to use my original one and modify it with 5 lug axles.
Thank You Clyde for your information and feedback.

The information on the page from your link is not correct. All Monza's came with the 7.5, the only Vega that had the 7.5 was the Cosworth, the rest were 6.5.
