How Do You Get A Glovebox Door Knob Off

Postby vegagtfan » Thu Jul 24, 2008 10:11 pm

Hi all I got a question how do you get the chrome knob off a Vega glove box door I see a little tiny hole on the knob but I don't have any clue what kind of tool it takes to get into it to get it off has anybody ever had one of these off before.

Any help with this would be great

Try using a paperclip.

I tried like hell for a while to get mine off inserting things into that hole. Then I just gave up and masked it off. It's still red behind it, but heck, if I couldn't get it off, not like anyone else will see it.

(lol, that first part sounds bad!)

If I remember correctly, there is a small tab on the top, just inside the latch "tube" assembly, inside the glove box door. Take a small screwdriver and depress the tab, and use another screwdriver and carefully pry the knob and inner latch assembly out of the outer tube. Maybe someone can come up with a photo.

Do you just have the chrome knob or is it the whole mechanism? I know I've replaced them before on older GM cars but can't remember how.

Try this!

You do not need a paper clip or what ever to take the lock mechanism out,
only just to put it back in.

The lock mechanism must stay in the closed or locked position as well as the latch. (I used locking pliers, not so tight).

There are two small spring loaded tangs that need to be depressed or pushed in at the tumbler, one at a time through the same small opening at the inside base, use a small jewelers screw driver.

Depress the fist tang (steel), lock set will come out about a half inch (may need to pry the lock lightly from the face to get it started), depress the second tang (brass) and it will fall right out.

You will need to insert a paper clip (I used a small alan wrench) to put the tumbler back in. Depress both those tangs while pushing the paper clip as far in as possible. It will hold those tangs in so that you can slip the mechanism back into place.

When you slip the tumbler back in, you need to line it up as if it were in the locked position. It should fall right into place.

Remove the paper clip or alan wrench, you will hear it click.

Matt,

Thank Travis for bringing this topic up.

I had replaced several of these lock sets with the keyed versions about 20 years ago.
The keyed versions had the identical chrome knob. I forget exactly what they were from. maybe a Chevette, Nova?

I have been playing with trying to remember how to take lock set apart for the last several nights. Wow

Alzheimer getting close?
