5.3 LM7 Monza Swap Mount Issues

Postby xirter » Fri Jul 03, 2020 3:22 pm

Hey Guys,
I have a 1980 Monza 4cyl car that I am trying to drop a boosted 5.3 LM7 into, and I'm running across the seemingly common issue of the motor mounts. I purchased the powerbyace.com mount kit and while the driver side seems to bolt up well, the passenger side does not seem to make much sense and is actually hitting the body where the right side threaded hole is on the adapter plate. The installation instructions were somewhat vague so hopefully someone here can help me figure this out. Do I need to clearance the engine compartment to fit the mount, alter the mount, or am I missing pieces? I have also purchased the oil pan and pickup tube to make the engine clear, and it will be backed by a th400. Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated. I would post pics but for some reason I can't.

What part number did you buy? Are the mounts #10510? You need the frame plates 10501. This thread isn't showing lsx mounts but id does show the factory frame plates that are on an early Vega 4 cylinder car. Your car did not have the Vega 4 cylinder motor so it did not have the plates. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=40898

I sent the photos, and yes I purchased the 10510K3 kit which comes with the adapter plates, mounts, and bolt kit.

you need the Vega shims and add a bit more to level the motor.

put the bolts in. is where you are holding it actually where it sits? isnt there some slop in the bolt holes that will allow adapter to move around a little?

No slop, and yes that is where the adapter plate sits and would align the mount correctly for the block. I just wanted to get another opinion before taking a hammer to it. Id be curious as to how other people have dealt with their motor mount setups. Thanks for all the help!

make sure mounts have engine half installed like this. If it is flipped engine will sit low on that side. you probably will need a shim between mount and block usually on drivers side to level engine. powerbyace has them too.

Good to know, should have the engine ready to be set in place next weekend so ill make sure to update on how everything bolts up. Thanks again, I'm sure this won't be my last question as to the build so this is a good place to be.

what did you end up doing to eliminate the interference between the engine mounting plate and body?

I ended up using a 3/4 hole saw and a grinder to open up a place for the plate to drop down flush. Engine is now in the car.

do you happen to have a picture of the mod you made (if not no big deal). I understand what you did but would like to send photo to powerbyace. Maybe he can make a change in future part - like moving hole back on plate so it doesn't interfere.
