1977 V8 Monza found after 18 years

Postby SOLSAKS » Fri Nov 04, 2011 4:12 pm

My name is Dave from North Carolina
this year I found my first car that I got when I was 16.

it is a 77 Monza coupe with factory V8 5.0 LITRE.
I sold it 18 years ago after not being able to find parts ( before we had ebay, etc. )
it was in really good, unmolested condition at that time.
it has been treated very badly over the last 18 years
i was joy riding in the country when i spotted it under a shelter,
i knew it was my car the moment i saw it.

it has not been wrecked but it is TOAST.
I am in the first stages of restoration.
i have many photos to post, we will start with where i found it.

the Monza in 2011

Postby SOLSAKS » Fri Nov 04, 2011 4:30 pm

the car still has the same rims we put on in 1985
they were chrome, now kind of rusty.
i have found several things in and on the car that i remember.
even little nicks, scrathes, dents that i remember how they happened.
even little black pieces of construction paper that i folded and slid under the AIr Cond vents
to make them quit swiveling loosely on their own, were still there after all the abuse and 18 years of time.

New-Old Parts for the Monza

Postby SOLSAKS » Fri Nov 04, 2011 4:39 pm

I never knew that GM made 10 hole aluminum rims for the H-Bodies
so I found a used set, had them re-machined, but the guy who restored the rims had never done such a small 13x6 rim,
and one flew off the lathe and was destroyed ( look for photo on future post ) he resolved the problem and did the remaining 3 with no trouble.
so then I found 2 N.O.S. 10 hole rims, and bought them....now I have 2 NOS and 3 refurbished.
then my quest for tires began, i have 2 sets now.
MASTER CRAFT AVENGERS & NATIONAL RENEGADE XT both 205 60 13 in size.
raised white letter 205 60 13's are very hard to find, thanks to tips from the same H body member I found the NATIONAL tires.
see photos attached.

Cool story. 1986 was a lot of fun. I graduated from HS that year and lived with mom and dad as well. I worked at a standard gas station and my only concern was where the party was going to be this Friday and Saturday night.lol I have a picture like yours too. No Monza though but a 76 camaro. I also have another picture of my parents driveway. Showing all my vehicles. 64 Chevy handy van, 69 dodge coronet,76 camaro, and a pinto station wagon. My mom and dad never complained. Haha When you recreate your photo keep the shorts and throw on a iron maiden shirt too.

YEAH, GOOD IDEA

the photo is not an accurate representation of my style, then or now....... this was taken on my first and last attempt

at canvas topsiders with no socks,...with shorts.......i hated the shorts and the no socks deal too

it was usually jeans and a concert t-shirt

and that is still true today.

thanks for the reply, and for looking at my post.

a dash i re-dyed.
it was black, with a badly aged and cracked woodgrain panel
my car did not have the woodgrain panel, but my dash was TOAST
had to find a nice one and re-dye, thought i could remove the woodgrain panel
and use the dash without it,...wrong

so i repaired the cracked plastic panel and re-covered with woodgrain vinyl
it turned out pretty good, i just hate the woodgrain on the dash, the console and guage area...o.k.
but dash,...i never liked those, but now i have one....phooey ! :x

i wish I would take more pics, but after building my first nova 2 door station wagon and no one looking at those pics I never take any of common things i do,(chevy never built a NOVA 2 door wagon, but Timmy did, twice) but you may not like the wood grain but we like looking at your pics,I'm the same age as you to, in 86 my favorite shirt was a then old van halen shirt that was cut off, lol oh to go back. hmmmm. Timmy
i currently drive a geo metro, insert silly joke here,, but i'll pass you while your getting gas
If you don't have time/money to do it right the first time, how will you have time/money to do it again. Timmy
