Sanderson headers, which require just a "touch" of messaging to get around the passenger control arm brace. Little bit of heat, a 3 lb hammer, and the end of a breaker bar to "mold it" and it looks factory with a 1/4"+ of clearance.

Looks really solid, especially for a Vega.
I’ve got a ’72 GT and have just got it sleeved and re-built along with the iron case saginaw 4-speed transmission, problem is I mislaid a part - can’t find it.
I’m in need of the ‘Transmission subframe support’ that holds up the back of the transmission.
Can you help - Please!

Thanks,
Cliff

Shroud and radiator cover installed. Shroud is riveted the the face of the radiator cover and attached through the radiator using universal shroud ties.

Shortened fuel pick up for the Vega gas tank. I had to "shorten" this one in 2 places using compression fittings. Fits perfect now. Started with pick up #FG05G:

I've been waiting for somebody with a Vega to do this and post pics. Could you not get enough out of it by just shortening the top section? Just wondering how reducing the distance between the variable resistor and the fuel sock will affect the reserve capacity. Looks good

Chris- I was trying not to cut the top brace, so I took everything I could out of the top before the brace and all of the bottom and then had to go back and cut the brace anyway as I still needed to remove over an inch. :bang: I am not sure if there would have been enough to remove without doing both regardless.

But you are right, when it gets to "E" it's gonna be VERY close to empty, so I am going to have to make sure not to go below 1/4 of a tank to be safe.

Thanks for the idea!

Maybe you can bend the float rod a bit to get your reserve back

nice job phil. how exactly did you determine where the float height had to be in regards to the bottom of the tank. maybe this is as low as you can get it(maybe bend it down a little more as zeke suggested. i dont know how zeke came to conclusion(that it is not low enough)? . i need to do mine in my 75 vega and am following your lead. i guess you are saying this float position will not give you a correct gas gauge reading. seems like you are saying you will still have a quarter tank left when gauge says empty. is that what you and zeke were assuming. if so, it would be a built in safety feature so you dont run out or were you thinking the opposite way and were worrying about running out of gas when the gauge says you still have a 1/4 tank left. i am thinking the float has to be just about all he way to he bottom of the tank, or close to it to get an empty reading. hope you can clear this up for me as i am having a hard time understanding this. thanks Art.

Chris - Great point, I believe that this will be an easy solution (bending the float arm up just a bit).

Art - What Chris is saying is that because I altered the distance between where the float bottoms out and the bottom of the pick up, I have altered what the float now considers "empty." There is a built-in "reserve" meaning that empty is not really empty in most vehicles, typically there is about 1-1.5 gallons left in the tank when you hit E. This is why if you press your luck, you can actually drive beyond E. So the float does not need to be lower to fix this, it needs to be higher to "set the reserve." It needs to come up about 1/2." At the moment the float sits about 1/2" off the bottom of the tank, it should be about 1". As Chris recommends, a quick bend upward of the float arm will fix this.

If I had to do this again, I would try cutting and splicing just the area ABOVE the float vs. both places. It would require cutting the pick up tube brace off the tube, but I did end up doing this anyway. This would result in only having 1 splice vs. 2 and the float to pickup filter distance would not be altered (but you still need to ensure that your filter close to the bottom of the tank).

I hope this helps?

Lots of updates since my last post. The car is now running. Gas tank installed, engine bay is just about done, transmission tunnel tweaked to accommodate the muncie 4 spd and Competition Plus shifter for a '70 Chevelle (puts the shifter in-line). Monza heater box has also been installed. Onto the interior and AutoPower roll bar install.

I was looking at your build and noticed your mounts are actually doug thorley not don hardy. I have a set of unused Doug thorley long tube headers and mounts. Let me know if you are interested. https://pmanro.wixsite.com/vega
