More completed on the motor, intake all cleaned up, installed and painted the intake, heads, thermostat housing. Installed the correct power steering pulley on the pump, painted the pump, pulley and the pump bracket that has to be on before you install the pulley. Next up is cleaning and painting the valve covers, cleaning up the distributor and carburetor and replacing the valve guide seals.

Got the new umbrella style valve stem seals installed. As I was very certain of the old seals where rock hard and broken.

Last night had my son learn how to replace the valve guide seals. Cleaned and painted up the valve covers. Used a drill to prime the new oil pump, fill the oil filter and prime the entire oil system that way we should not have a dry start, plan on cranking it a few times before do a test fire up on it, want to confirm we have oil pressure first. I could easily get a good 30 psi with the drill turning the pump so it should all be good. Got more some more assembly completed water pump pulley, distributor back in and new cap and rotor. I have discovered I am missing a heat shield and two plug wire retainers for the driver side so I've posted a thread in the wanted section here and on FB and we will see if someone might have them, if not I will fabricate them from scratch. Waiting for my valve cover spreaders to arrive and then we can bolt the valve covers on. Also ordered Eastwood Cast Iron Grey exhaust manifold paint, we will see how well it holds up but either way it will make the manifolds look pretty for a while, plus gas tank sealer and tank tone paint all should be here in the next week or so, I hope.

It seems the small details always take the longest, been working on sorting out what I need to buy and what I need to fabricate to fix the issue with the spark plug wires on the driver side. I think I have what I need coming and I will fabricate the rest. Got the starter wire all installed and shielded. Started installed, P/S Pump bracket on, one of the Alternator brackets, the other has to wait until the valve cover spreader show up and we can finish install the valve covers. Carb is cleaned up a best as I can with out rebuilding it and installed, PCV hooked up. This ironically is the air cleaner that just happened to be on the motor when I got it and so for now we are going to use it and see once the engine is in and see if we have clearance for a taller air cleaner. I am going to route the Passenger side breather tube into the bottom of that air cleaner at a later date. My son, (BTW his name is Steven), spent the entire night on the wire wheel cleaning the starter, more brackets and bolts and the exhaust manifolds and some heat shields all up so they will be ready when the paint shows up......however I am getting antsy to test fire this thing again. If the paint takes too long I might temporarily put the exhaust manifolds on before we have the paint so we can test fire it.

Interesting, the alternator bracket must have changed to a two piece design for 1980. Looking good eh :th:

Here's the bracket I sold from my 79

Hi Chris,
Well there was no V8 Monza alternator brackets for 1980 as a V8 wasn’t offered in 1980. All my brackets and pulleys I sourced from anywhere I could find them one here, one there, I even fabricated some of my own initially but later finally found factory ones to replace them with, so I have no idea what year the brackets I have were from. That said I have seen my style of bracket on other Monza’s I have the one stamped metal one that you see in the pic and the other part is actually a cast steel part that bolts to the two front pass. Side intake bolts and uses one bolt into the front edge of the pass cyl head. I have seen a number of different ones if you have the smog pump or AC. What I see is typically the alternator would be on the far pass side and the p/s pump on the far driver side unless you had the smog pump or AC and then they put the alternator in the center like mine will be. For me it doesn’t matter if it’s center or pass side as I don’t have a smog or AC. Just came down to which brackets I could find.

Tonight we got the power steering pump installed, I cannibalized some parts of the Monza V6 donor car, a metal Vacuum line and a split loom retainer that runs down the side of the valve cover, I made a vacuum line for the distributor. We cleaned up the transmission and painted the bell housing. The rest will be painted a cast metal color. Waiting on the seal kit for the transmission and the paint for cast metal paint for it.

Well the valve cover spreaders finally arrived. Turned engine with a ratchet first a couple rotations to make sure everything was working as expected. Then piped the mechanical fuel pump to a jerry can and started winding it over to check again for oil pressure and to prime the carburetor. Then we fired it up, started right away with no issues, even idled good considering I only ball parked the timing. Had the valve covers still off to watch oil come up to the lifters. Only had oil on one lifter initially but when I brought the rpms up it started to come in on the rest. No coolant system hooked up so I was reluctant to run it too long. After that we bolted on all the rest of the accessories except for the fan which is not painted yet. Pulled the exhaust manifolds back off as I still have to paint them and heat shields and install the driver side spark plug wire brackets that GermanMonza was kind enough to ship me them from Germany, I don't expect to see them for a few more weeks or the paint from Eastwood either. Some pics of the finished motor. Might post a link to the engine running in a bit.
