Shipping options from Canada to US

Postby classic_cruiser » Wed Sep 19, 2018 9:50 pm

So, I've been looking and looking for a while for a 79-80 tilt column that won't break the bank, and I've found one in AB Canada for a good price. But... the salvage yard won't ship to US. They will let me arrange shipping on my own though. I'm finding out that shipping is rather expensive since I'm on east coast US, and is coming in at over $100, which is more than the column itself. I've checked usps and netparcel.com for starters. Never having had to ship anything from Canada myself before, are there other options? Are there other surprises to watch out for?

Brokerage charges.
I just got a good reaming from UPS. :cuss:
I don't know if USPS charges brokerage fees, but Canada Post doesn't although my last parcel from the US did have a $9.00 handling charge.

Yeah, the fees are insane, someone's getting rich and it ain't us. Im in Canada and my fix was getting a US postage address and having everything shipped to it and then I go down and import it myself. I've had motors, body parts, tires you name it shipped there including my 205/60R13 RWL BFG's. I'm in Canada and luckily for me it's a whole 15 min drive to the Canada/US boarder and my PO box is no word of a lie 100' south of US CBP.

Terry I don't know how far you are from the border but go to a Canadian "Auto Wreckers" they will have a "Hot Line" to all of Canada and they can get it delivered to them and you can pick it up. That would mean two trips, It might just work out, another option is you need a volunteer in the Hamilton/ Niagara Falls area to order it and you could do an "H-Body Visit". Most UPS stores are privately owned and will accept deliveries on your behalf, so you maybe able to find some combination you can live with. Any of the couriers will do "Pick-Ups" UPS will go to the yard and get it for you, that will however not be cheap! Harry

Thanks for the tips, to all. I do know one guy in CAN who might be willing to have it delivered to his place and he is near Toronto. I'll have to find out what it costs to get the column sent over to his area. Is there some sort of special shipping between the salvage yards they use? This is a lot more difficult than I was thinking it would be...

I posted a wanted ad to see if I can get any local US leads in the meantime. I've found a few on car-part in the US, but it seems that the database is out of date as every time I call to ask one of the yards with a hit, they tell me they don't have it anymore.

I believe they do. But I can't guarantee that, any I have bought have been from a 2-3 hour distance and they "come to town" a couple of times a week to supply the body shops, and do trade with the local companies/competition, so cost was [way back then, mid '80's] acceptable to me.

:o  :bang: :o  :bang: :o  :bang: The number of times this has been the case, and I am still taken aback, you'd a thunk I would have gotten a clue by now! So welcome to the biggest club in automotive, home renovations and dealing with family, histories!

       do you mean that modern computer databases aren't accurate? We'd all be laughing except it is so true that hurts to laugh! :bang: :cuss:
We all wish you Luck, and if I can help let me know, but it seems the geography isn't in our favour on this one. :( Harry

I'm not sure about US/Canada shipping but Greyhound in the US is a less expensive option.

Unfortunately Greyhound is in the process of ceasing all operations in Western Canada sighting low profit margins as the reasoning behind it.

Greyhound doesn't do cross boarder shipping, and they closed up their "Centre/terminal" here in town, they are still supposed to be working from somewhere, but it must be a secret, because I couldn't find it. It is too bad that they are having some difficulty, it was a great option to be added to the shipping list. If GH have a bus going from Alberta you might be able to get it near enough to you to work, just meet the bus at the nearest to the boarder, bus terminal. That would be dependant on a bus still being near the departure point while they wind down operations. Harry
