retirement- really different life style

Postby mldeolde » Sat Nov 24, 2018 7:23 pm

trying to get a grip on the retired life style. lots more free time, more physical infirmatees, more frustrations dealing with government medicares crazy set up procedures that don't line up with HMOs sign up dates etc. add to that a lot less money to live and play on all adds up to what should be a happy time of life being a lot more difficult than advertised. :bang: :bang: :bang: case in point: only my second social security check was due in my bank account today and it didn't show up. and after a long investigation on the social secureity web site can find no reason for it not receiving it today. I keep hearing that old song in my head ITS ONLY JUST BEGUN TO LIVE but no white lace and promises, just a good screwing. the government assumes the right to do what ever it pleases when it pleases and can change the rules when ever it wants it seams.

I'm about a year and half to go, and can't wait.Going for the earliest one myself, working as little as possible a day, more better things to do with my life then working.( Working to live, not living to work.)

I took a buy out from Xerox when I was 61 years old. I got a severance of one week for each year worked which was 43 weeks of pay. It worked out well because it took me one month past my 62nd birthday and I elected to take Social Security right away. I compared the the difference of taking it early vs later and decided this was best for me. This along with a pension is working out great. Still have a IRA and 401K which I am not touching. I can't believe how busy I am, I am absolutely loving it and while I do have to pay for health insurance (expensive) I never regretted retiring for one moment. Since most companies no longer offer pensions I strongly suggest starting early to save for retirement. Social security is not enough to live on so you need other sources of income.

mldeolde I'm sure you will get your SS checks straightened out. Hopefully it will be what you expected and the difficulties will fad away!

I'm similar to Doug only going to work full time another 18 Months. Everybody has different situations but everybody needs a plan. Time will help you I'm sure.

1/3 of the population take their SS at 62 and I plan to do the same. I can only imagine what will happen in the future to it, not that it will go away but totals will probably be reduced. Most people our age can't even think about retiring on their terms. I've always been preparing but have really stepped up the planning these last few years. Drives my wife crazy :P

I waited till I was 67 to mostly retire. I still work for friends in my trade frequently but usually just in a supervisory capacity. it was a pleasant surprise when they deposited a healthy bonus in my bank account initially due to my waiting the extra two years before starting to collect social security. that paid off nearly all my depts which made life much easier. dealing with money and the government has always made me uneasy. I just don't have the piece of mind that they will do the right thing.

That's why it is necessary to plan for retirement. If you start saving at a young age you should have no problem retiring. Unfortunately many companies don't offer pensions any longer so the burden falls on the individual to plan accordingly.

Hey Doug, How are things in P.R. these days, I guess there is still a long way to go for it to be some what normal again, sounds like some of the infrastructure might never be rebuilt??? I guess you still can't beat being in 70-90 deg sunny weather almost everyday. I been to the Caribbean once (2 years ago) and have made it a goal to be spending a lot more time there, maybe not moving there but certainly doing a lot of vacationing there.

Cheap living it is here, but the government has its hands tied by the USA so they can't spend anything without asking them first, even the governor cant afford a razor Lol .

Things are high in price like Hawaii, tax on everything is 11%,but housing is dirt cheap , electric is only high if you have A/C on all the time, water is cheap, the sun shines almost every day. ( We were living on $100 a week when I was laid off for 3 months)

Most homes are fixed, but some are abandoned, some still have blue tarps on, most businesses are up and running, but others are still in disarray. Crime is high but mostly drug related. The average person has nothing to worry about.

Internet is sketchey on windy days ,still not all the towers are repaired yet.

It's been a little too hot this fall as we have seen 90's a few times, mid to upper 80's most of this season. No rain for almost a month straight except for a 5 minute shower here and there.

Ya, that's what I'm talking about. I could totally do that. 90's are fine is you don't have to work in it and you are sipping a cool one on the beach or at the pool side. I'm assuming you don't have water front but when your on a island the water is never very far away. Salinas looks pretty close to the coast. What's that about 60 minutes from San Juan? Sorry, kinda of a late joiner to this forum, wished I found it and joined earlier. An unmeasurable amount of H body info and most of the members will go way out of there way to help a fellow member with parts or even just some measurements or pictures. I try to help anyone I can here. I bought my first H-Body is 1984, still have that car but she's hurt'in bad. Back in the early late 80's I wasn't driving it (not a very good kid and car seat car), so it sat in the yard for a few years. Then fixed it up for my son's first car, that lasted a couple of years, got really good at engine and transmission swaps, oddly enough, car would run great all week and limp home broken Friday or Saturday night. I had a pretty good idea what was happening, especially since it wasn't just this car, his friends cars were showing up with grenaded motors, fan blades going through hoods etc. He ended the whole weekend warrior racing idea when he ran out of time and money to fix the car after bringing it home sounding a lot more like a diesel than a gas motor. He parked it at the side of my house and believe it or not after sitting completely untouched for 10 years the dam car started up. I had to move it and at first I thought I was going to have to drag it with a rope with my truck, something made me put a battery in it and crank it over, after a few drinks of fuel down the carb it stayed running on whatever 10 year old gas turns into, smelt fairly nasty running, more like varathane than gas. She's quite rusty in bad places, so she has become the donor car for my Monza V8 build I will be starting soon. I have a mostly rust free 80 quad h/l roller, just rust in the doors, one fender and a couple of very tiny other spots, floors and underside are totally rust free. I have acquired a set of rust free doors and a fender and hood (previous owner chopped a half assed hole through the hood for a high rise and air cleaner). So do you have an h-body in P.R., if so did you bring it down with you or buy it there?

Had to sell my Monza only took my truck on the container.( 22 feet of belongings- 18 feet of truck with the bed full / 40 ft High cube)

Believe me it was hot (87) today working on the farm, glad I only work 5 hours a day now.

Our house is only a 1/4 mile from the ocean but here it's only hot especially when the weather comes from the south. Not much beach between the road and the ocean, they just finished fixing the section where the road buckled from Maria, still have to put up the new guardrail.

Hi Doug,
Is the south coast a mix of sandy beaches and rocky cliffs? Just curious. What do you farm? The first day my wife and I were in Jamaica, (it was in the low 80's), we were sitting at the beach and I told her I could feel the water evaporating off my eye balls. Only noticed the first day, so I guess my body adjusted to it. We stayed in Negril 7 mile sand beach but also went down the coast a bit to some rock bluff where tourists and locals were cliff diving, ok to watch but no participation for me, I want to walk the rest of my ancient life. really enjoyed the scenery and weather, now I just have to get my A_ _! back to the Caribbean. I want to visit some of the other islands as many of them are completely different from each other depending how they formed, lava, coral etc. Plus I want to scuba more and I can where I live since I'm right on the west coast (basically about 3 hours north of Seattle, Washington but the water temps, even in the summer are about 45 deg. F. so you need a lot of gear to stop from getting hypothermia. Diving in warm water is significantly more relaxing.

No just sand, the army corps of engineers had to put boulders between the beach and the road to keep the road from eroding.

My wife's house( grandparents) where she grew up is just a little aways from us on the ocean, the water has moved up from behind alot in the last 50 years, got damaged in the storm also, half rebuilt in block ( was all wood) currently, owned by her cousin's stepson.

Rincon looks like a place you would like on the west side of the island, cliffs and stuff like surfing. Many gringos are selling their homes over there , reducing the prices by the thousands every month.
