Rear End Help!

Postby gearheadmike » Sun Mar 17, 2019 11:41 am

Looking for some info on the early 6.5 rear end i need to find out the brake backspacing. I believed it to be 2-1/4" I narrowed my 6.5 for a project but the info and measurements i wrote down got damaged and illegible to read. Also i believe the overall rearend width was 54-1/2"

I think you are right about the overall width. The brake backspacing I am unsure of what you want. Also that measurement could vary depending on the year 6.5 you have. The drums went from 2" to 2 1/4 in 76 I think. Someone else please jump in and verify.

The backspacing measurement from the outside axle flange to the inside of the flange welded to the rear-end. My rear-end stamped # is HAC 259 2
I'm 90% sure this is pre 75.

The 1975 and earlier rearends had the small 1 1/4" x 9" brakes. In 76 all H bodies went to the more common GM 2" x 9.5" brakes. I do not know about the back spacing measurement.

Are you ordering new axles or looking to put different brakes on it?

Getting them resplined through Moser. I removed 6+ inches off each side so i'm out of the spline area with plenty of meat to respline ithem.

What are you using this for, it's a very weak rear end if you are changing engines.

I know it's a wear rear but right now with a budget it'll have to work as i'm only into it for $30 plus the $125 for re-splinning.
Its going in a 1500-2000 lb car with a s10 2.2 4cyl with skinny tires.

That should be okay, the 2.2 and the stock Vega engine have about the same torque. Just didn't want you to put in a V8 and waste your money having the work done on it.

Put the drum over the backing plate, measure through the center and add 1/8”

Just out of curiosity, why are you narrowing it if you're not doing a V8?

It's for my 50 Crosley project car which is a small car considering the widest part of the body is 49".
Actually just got the axles back from Moser engineering a few days ago. Axles fit great!
