How to drain trans fluid

Postby Monzadude » Mon Aug 03, 2020 8:57 pm

Might seem like a dumb question but I cant seem to figure out how to drain the fluid out of my transmission. It's the factory 4 speed mated to a 3.8. I checked the fluid and its up ok but I want to drain and replace it. The car sat for 25-30 years so I'm changing all fluids. The trans is the last one. I'm sure I'm missing something but I couldn't see it.

Some Saginaw 3 & 4 speeds do not have a drain Plug, Only a fill Plug. If yours is one of those you have to pump or Suck out the oil thru the fill hole.

I have also heard if you remove the bottom bolt that attaches the tailshaft housing to the main case the fluid will drain out that hole. I don't know if it actually works or not. The couple of Saginaws I have owned have had fill and drain plugs. Good luck with it.

The bottom tailshaft bolt will allow fluid to drain. Otherwise you need to either suck it out the drain hole or pull the side cover.
