S10 Rear Identification already in Vega

Postby Low_Bridge » Sun Apr 04, 2021 8:31 am

My 75 Vega came with 5 lug front & back. I bought as a roller. I was told it was S10 ~

It has no Brake hardware on the rear end just backing plates wheels bolted to axels.

Question: How do I determine what generation S10 rear I have to purchased the correct Brake drums, wheel Cylinders etc....

Thank you

Hey Low,

I think you should check the spline count on the axle shafts and check the ring gear diameter. From what I know 83-92 S-10 trucks with a 7.5" ring gear are 26-spline, '88 and later S-10s with a 7.625" ring gear are 28-spline. Brakes should interchange iirc between all 7.5, 7.625 rears, as long as you buy all the hardware for the same year. Only a few S-10s with ZR2 option came with 8.5", which could have bigger drums but I'm not sure about that. Hope this helps.

I was hoping not to have to pop the cover but will take that route unless I get any other clues ~

At least it will reveal other secrets I'll eventually need to know anyway.

Thanks & will report back.

Well you probably don’t have to, if it’s only about the brakes. 7.5 and 7.625 have the same diff cover, they’re easy to tell from 8.5s. Both have 10 bolts, but 8.5 covers are round and 7.x are more oval shaped. If you google that you will see it immediately.

By the Backing plate I believe the rear to be first gen Series 1982 ?

My Goal is to know what I can order as I need everything after the backing plate forward/ outwards ( I know the backing plate has a bend or 2 to straighten)

So what are the biggest drum options?

Would a Backing plate from a later series fit enabling me to use a later series / gen brake set up!

I don't think I want to go disc ~

Thanks for the help German!

Just doing a bit of Googling the backing plate looks to be the same style as the early 1980's 2WD S10's

What Jeff said!

If you follow the link you'll see that the backing plate fits all the years from '82 thru '92, and your diff cover tells you it's a 7.5/7.625". I don't know if they made any different size drum brakes for S-10s, but I don't think so, even after '92.
